Wildlife encounters

Well, kinda, but not really. Faintly related to rhinos, but also to pigs, camels, llamas, etc....

And javelina really are tasty!!!

I have javelina on my property on a regular basis, almost daily last Winter. I don't always see them but I see their "work". Their lil' babies are kind of cute. The big ones....not so much.
This guy was 50' from my back door last Spring. They are so prevalent, I've stopped taking photos of them.

bow n arrow would be fun and silent within city limits :whistling:

That is a big one, for sure. Might as well leave it there to finish up it's life cycle since the tomato plant is at the end of it's life/season. The sphinx moth that this caterpillar transforms into is impressive.

I will keep an eye on it and not let the cats play with it.

Encountered a mountain lion today at Whiting Ranch at the top of 4 corners. I was alone, sitting on the shaded bench area when a mountain lion crosses in front of me within 4-5 feet. It looked at me and kinda crouched for about 5 seconds before I stood up and hollered. Enough to startle it down the valley towards Billy Goat / Mustard. Looked to be about 60-70lbs (based on comparisons to my old Husky). One of the most exciting and terrifying experiences on the trail for me. Unfortunately, no photos. Wasn't really thinking about the phone during the encounter. I did report the incident to the park ranger, who said there was one other sighting that day on Whiting Rd. For anyone who may hike the trails with young kids, keep them close!

It’s a most unique experience. Stoked for you! But yea, that’s a little close.

That's the only place I've seen them in person as well.

I saw something special this morning and I really should have stopped to take a pic!

On the climb up Loma Alta to meet with @Faust29 this morning, I passed by a stand of huge Diadore trees where the local flock of peacocks roosts. At least 15 hens were on the ground, led by two males. The males were up on a lawn pecking at the grass at eye level but there was a strange white bird with them which I thought was a heron or an egret. Suddenly, the white bird lifted its head as I passed by. It was a full albino peacock!

The albino would be something to see, but be glad they belong to someone else. Peafowl have no redeeming qualities IMO.

Had a bear pass through last week and knock over the trash can. No activity since and hopefully stays that way.

This handsome denizen has an injured rear leg/foot, but it didn't seem to inhibit his ability to cruise.

Seconds later, his buddy appears.

Wife saw a jackrabbit hauling ass through the snow around the neighbor's house, followed by a yote in hot pursuit. A copious supply of Gamble's quail and rabbit keep these guys well fed.

This guy wasn’t bothered much by us riding close by. Was acting strange as most in our neck of the desert just high tail it when they see you. Then we noticed that it kept squatting to relieve its self. Obviously sick. As we rode along it jogged just ahead. Then we noticed another one that was following the first.
Nature ride. We wouldn’t have seen it if we were riding our couches.
