Who's itching to get out of dodge?

We only had to cancel one trip due to Covid19, a catamaran trip to the British Virgin Islands for our 30th Anniversary that was supposed to start next Wednesday. I'm not too bummed because we've re-scheduled for 2021 and since it's now pre-paid, we'll stay an extra week next year on land on St John.

That being said, I'm going stir crazy and spend most of my 15 hours of free time planning my 1st, 2nd and 3rd trip out of town once this is over. I'm not booking anything but my 1st trip to ride will be out to Hurricane for sure, then maybe a long weekend at a Scottsdale resort and once Mexico gets the all clear, a week in Cabo!!

How about you?

We were supposed to go to Kauai in mid June, right after school got out. Maybe the trip would have been safe, but rather than risk it we pushed until August. With my wife being a teacher we usually travel a good bit in the Summer, but by the time Summer rolls around I will have been out of work for a couple months. Assuming I can resume work by Summer it might be hard for me to justify any other trips. I do a backpacking/fishing trip every year to the Golden Trout Wilderness starting 6/30 that I bailed on last year because of persistent snow pack. Sure hope I don't have to miss that again.

I'm itching to get out of here for sure... Some trips that I want to do would be feasible with minimal relaxation of closures and travel restrictions along with added preparation for self reliance on my part. Or depending on one's ethics, no change in restrictions from present :sneaky: :ninja:. Remote places that see little traffic, dispersed camping, and no interaction in public places aside from gas stops. Buggravy's Golden Trout Wilderness trip is a example that fits. Some bikepacking trips could also be fully self supported. When/where I'd go first would depend on weather/conditions when restrictions are lifted. I expect we'll be in the heat of summer before that happens.

Before all this hit I was hoping to bikepack the Colorado trail this summer. Then the usual long weekend trips aside from that. Tahoe/Downieville also planned.

We were supposed to spend a couple weeks in Oregon for the U of O graduation. Several days of ride time were built into the equation. Now, there's no graduation...

Edit: On the bright side, I'll have lots of exploring to do right from my new back door... Once the deputies move away from the trailheads. :cautious:

Heat of Summer....doesn't Summer officially start June 20th? You really think it's going to be that long because you can ride? You can still LEGALLY ride in Sedona right now from certain trailheads **BUT** they are really pushing it as a locals only thing and asking people NOT to travel there to ride. I haven't really looked into riding anywhere just yet but I'm hoping the gates gets dropped, at least elsewhere, at the end of April.

Reeeally looking forward to camping and hiking in the eastern sierras with my wife this summer and fall. I don’t really do far away mtb trips because my wife doesn’t ride so most of our road trip time/budget is for things we do together and that’s just fine. Sure will hit the riding in SoCal mountains tho.
Luckily we got in a Utah trip just in time in early March and didn’t really have any travel plans to cancel until late June, hope traveling/camping is feasible by then (and we’re still employed )

I’m in the same boat. The list of local day riding trips and over nighters that have been cancelled is long. Had plans to do Eroica California in Cambria for a weekend and a bikepacking trip to Catalina over a weekend. Both are cancelled. Locally, the Belgian Waffle Ride, Redlands Strada Rosa and the Archipelago have been cancelled.

Our youngest had a work abroad trip planned for Spain that was to start in May that has been cancelled. We were scheduled to meet her in France at the end of July for a week. That one is currently still on the calendar, but we’re doubtful that it will happen.

We lucked out and did a weekend trip to Tucson the week before the shutdown with @mtbMike and @pdqmach26 and a few others, so at least there was that. But yes, I am itching to go somewhere soon and actually ride my mountain bikes.

Just watched a video clip about France and they were showing an absolutely empty Paris. Crazy to see.

This hit my kids really hard. We had a LOT of trips and activities planned for them:

NICA HS season for two oldest (one senior/last year in NICA, the other one jumping back in with a vengeance and really pumped for it).
Volleyball club trips to Long Beach, Vegas, and Chicago.
Senior prom.
High School graduation.
Oldest had a mission trip to South Pacific to help build a school.
Youngest's eighth grade D.C. trip (I was going to go with her).
Eighth grade promotion.
Back to back Sweet 16 & 18th birthday parties we were planning up in Big Bear for early June (still might happen, but looking less than likely).
Three weeks we spend in San Clemente for summer (July, so a maaaaaybe).

We're actually saving a lot of money right now due to these being cancelled, but the kids are VERY bummed, especially the oldest.
His senior year evaporated before him, just as he was really gaining friends and making connections and getting involved.

If we can get out in the early summer we may make a fast trip up to Bend and obviously our beach time still. But all the other stuff will be over and gone.

Our family vaca to Maui in June is pretty questionable. There's some deal if the resort cancels we get full refund, if we cancel only half (some was pre paid). So waiting to see how that works out.
Probably broke some rule, but I did get out of dodge this week, to our place up in Lake Arrowhead. I have not gone to a public place since I left OC five days ago, and the only soul I've seen was a guy walking his dog on the road, but I didn't get within 50 feet of him. Did a hike with the dogs in the foot-and-counting snow today, otherwise doing about the same thing as if I were in OC.

Just about the same over here.

My knee replacement surgery was indefinitely postponed. Spent our 33rd at home. Supposed to be in Dallas for a killer wedding tomorrow. Three of my four destination gravel rides were cancelled. The annual May Sierra's fly fishing trip is off.

On the horizon, I can hope for a brutally hot Dove opener, the Mammoth Tuff ride and my niece's wedding in Cabo. We might be the odd couple out, but we are actually having a pretty nice time with each other. A blessing in this mess for sure.

It's getting pretty hot by mid to late May most years. I think testing needs to become available to a good % of the population before restrictions get lifted. That still seems a ways off, which is why I think May at the earliest. It seems unfathomable everything could remain shut down beyond that time frame but a month ago it was unfathomable that everything would be shut down to begin with. CA and some other states are being very conservative.

I wouldn't say we can legally go ride in places like Sedona right now. Trails may not be closed but there are stay at home orders in place here and in and AZ that state we are only allowed to leave home for essentials. Exercise is one of those but the intent is to exercise close to home not travel to another town, county or state. Fortunately that is not being strictly enforced but some LEO could certainly use that interpretation if they wanted to. #vanlifers are still out there and I've heard of them getting chased out of several places recently. Less likely to happen in states like NV and AZ that were more resistant to restrictions, but also more likely to happen in popular destinations like Sedona. Go to less popular areas and recreate responsibly and hopefully you will not be bothered.

I actually did a trip to AZ a few weeks ago, also before the stay at home order. Solo trip, didn't call anyone to meet up, camped dispersed, and took all my food with me so I didn't need to stop at businesses. Only stopped at gas stations. Had reservations about going but needed to use a couple vacation days, and since the social distancing plan seemed solid I went for it. I'll definitely continue riding around SD and may venture out further but will keep it low key by hitting more remote spots, staying self contained and no trip reports. Hopefully I am wrong on timeline and things start to open up sooner.

I didn't have anything specifically planned. I am looking forward to spending time in the mountains again on a bike or running, but that is weather related and not the virus. I do look forward to bike parks again I suppose.

I would like to travel and hit more trails, and bought a "van" to do so. But it is a serious project that needs work. I haven't touched it because I figure I will have plenty of time once I get laid off. That is the one hang up I really have, not knowing. If I knew I was being laid off on April 30th, I would be okay with it. I would plan around it. Or June 1, or October 15th, whatever. I would just come in to work, do my job (probably more enthusiastically), and go home planning for the loss of work. Or, if I knew that no matter what, I would hold regular hours, I could plan around that too. But right now, I am just waiting. And I doubt we will get any actual warning of impending layoffs. I kinda understand why, but at the same time I am a (kinda) adult and can deal with the news either way and plan around it. But being treated like I can't handle the news and will misbehave knowing I will be out of work frustrates me.

But my return to running, which had nothing to do with this virus (I started around December) has really helped me out. I told myself I needed a break from XC racing to regain my focus and motivation, and it is working. My running form is returning, my fitness is (I think) maintaining, I am enjoying the same trails (and NEW trails) via running, but also enjoying those trails on the bike when I do ride. I am looking forward to traveling with my running shoes and bikes.

Also wish I knew what was going on with this whole job thing so I could know if I am being a huge idiot, or small idiot, buying and XC bike. And, how much to spend. I might be willing to spend more than I should if I knew.

It looks like Cabo in June is out. Bummer because this time we didn't buy trip insurance. Courtney's getting her Masters ( Master of Science in applied life sciences ) next month. No graduation ceremony. My son got his first big boy job was on the job 2 weeks and they asked him to work from home. April & May's Motorcycle Enduro's cancelled. Kokopelli cancelled. ( Really bummed about Kokopelli-) Anyway, my wife has been out of the house about once a week now in the car with me to go through a drive through burger stand. She's been hiding for 30 + days now. She says that when the restaurants open back up that's when she'll go back out into the world. Meanwhile I do the shopping now. Leave it to me to buy fresh squeezed OJ for $ 2.99 on the quick grab to get home and fine out it was $ 12.99 p/ half gal. I'm ready for this to be over and want to pack up my wife and get out of town. Everybody is healthy with all my family and I only know of one person who tested positive for Covid 19. She never had to go to the hospital. She and her husband and 2 small kids are doing fine. They live in Utah.

I like it here, I am just ready for the (as @mtnbikej says) “inside people” to retreat back to their couches. Being able to plan a summer Mammoth or Big Bear trip would be nice but I am genuinely thankful for where I live. Road trips are what I miss but we will get back to that.
I LOVE your new Avatar - and it's about time. Your screen name has never been more relevant than in this great TP shortage of 2020!

Why is Cabo in June out already? Have you received communication from the resort that they won't be back open? Does your wife's restaurant plan apply to only California's order? I ask because most states will be "open for business long before CA even though we don't have anywhere near the cases or problems they expected. *For now*, AZ is going to open up on April 30th and Utah on May 1st. Once that gets verified and comes to fruition, I'll be heading to Utah to ride. https://bongino.com/heres-when-each...90hAe8J0eyLagd-QFaVV1Ip5iPZhSJhqq_kdpqwTJINBA
