Howdy Boys and...girls? I just registered for the Whiskey 50 race in Prescott, AZ in April. :o First race since 1995....I plan on doing this as a fast recreational ride.

Complete details are here: <a class="postlink" href="http://www.epicrides.com/index.php?contentCat=6" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.epicrides.com/index.php?contentCat=6</a>

I will be combining this with a family trip to the Grand Cyn so I won't be able to carpool. This also coincides with the OTB trip to Sedona so there will probably be OTB'ers involved.

If anyone has any info on camping in the Prescott area let me know....
Also if anyone has previous experience with this event, post up and let me know what's up.

Are you doing the 50? You got me tempted to do a fast rec ride...

It does mean I'm discussing with the Misses about Calendar strategy and funding....so yeah, I'm close to in muchaho!

You old geezers up to welcoming a young lad? My b-day is in April and this may be a great way to celebrate.

Geezers got them thar AARP cards they give to veterans of the Civil War. :D Ask Mikie, he'll show you his sometime. If you ask to see mine, I might show you something else!

All are welcome. Just post up if you're going, and where you're staying. That way we know where to bring your body after the carnage of the "fast recreational ride"!

Tempting I may have to check the calander and funds aswel! Sounds like a fun fast Rec Ride! ;-)

Bring the AARP card Warren so we can get the Denny's discount.

You wish in 3 days! C'mon Tom just one day.....you can sign up for the 25....if you can't handle the 50.

Anybody know is there is a rider limit? I definitely want to go but I have to figure out family and work logistics first. Don't want to run the risk of waiting too long to decide/register.
I will combine it with a couple of days in Sedona with the OTB gang.

Did it last year. It's a great time. Would love to do it this year but family commitments need to be kept.

Prescott is a great town and the Whiskey a great event. The difference between the 50 and 25 miler is a out and back fire road. Elevation is pretty high too. You'll have fun.

Hey Ross, I rode the Whiskey 50 3 times and I think it is the best event I have ever entered. Prescott is a cool town with some great trails and nice people. Lots of fun night life after the ride too. I think the only advice I have is to get a fast start riding through town before the dirt as this can be a bottleneck.

When I was being filmed for Gorging they followed me at the 50 one year. It didn't make the film but here is a clip. Don't do what I did.

Still going to this event. Heading out Thursday afternoon. Camping wherever we can find a spot. Let me know if you're going....gonna be a fun fast recreational ride...ha ha !

I wish I could go Bud. I just got clearance to get back on my bike. That's 3 FN weeks off of it. Gotta go easy for the next two weeks in effort to bet back what I lost. This always such a fricken battle....Grrrrrrrrrr. :x

So.....the Whiskey is on Saturday....check out the weather report for Saturday in Prescott, AZ. The ONLY day of the week with close to 80% chance of rain, a high temp of 45F and 15-20 mph winds! For this I get to drive 7 hours....

Sorry no pics-I didnt dare bring my camera(phone) in that weather!

This was my first time at the Whiskey 50 and it was quite memorable. The rain at the start turned to hail and then became a full on snowstorm at the top. Guys at one of the aid station made a snowman! Temps hovered about 26 or 27F for the first few hours.
I was stuck in the conga line on the singletrack and it cost me a lot of time, though I was just riding to finish. I think that some of these XC-racer guys need to learn how to ride! Put a rock, root or log in front of them and they're off the bike-and so is everyone behind them. All of the people quitting and walking back down the trail didn't help either.
Glasses-useless, water bottle tops-frozen, SPDs-frozen mud shut them down for 10 miles! Good news is my PI WRX gloves and Shimano MW-81 boots keep me reasonably warm, though my thumbs checked out for a while on the coldest parts. You know the AVID turkey warble? You should hear it times 50...or more.
It took 3 hours just to get to the 50/25 split so I was just riding to finish. A lot of people quit. A lot. The aid station was awesome! I never had an oreo that tasted so good.
The ride down to Skull Valley was fun and sketchy due to the mud and my Renegade rear tire. Made the slick corners very interesting...
About 9 or 10 miles down and then back up, plus another 3 or so to the top! Ouch!!! What a grind....
Amazing rocky singletrack was the reward and the punishment. Physically and mentally demanding and I didn't have a lot left in the tank-the red light was on the fuel gauge!
A little frustrating was ending up in the middle of the re-scheduled 25er race and its complement of fresh, clean, dry, technically inept, riders. Sucks to let someone past only to have them stop and dismount in front of you to carry their bike over a totally rideable rock section. Oh well, someone handed me a piece of bacon and I was on my way to the finish.
When I got to the finish the crowd was going crazy! The announcer says-"this guy did the 50-still smiling-look at him!" And I was a sight to see. Covered in mud from tires to helmet, never felt so good to finish. My first race in 16 years.....WOW!
I must say, the support of Epic Rides, and the people of Prescott, AZ., was off the charts. People stood in the rain and cheered us on and the support crews along the route suffered through the bad weather along with us. The bad weather was a wild card but I would definitely do this again. I just wish that bacon station was a little further down the hill!

Dood! Now that was a great ride report. Even without pics (you totally suck) it was descriptive enough that I could envision the event. Great job compadre! You do it again, and I will definitely do the ride with you...

Nice RR there Ross. Glad you didn't let a little weather stop you from completing the 50. I need to get back there and do it again. Epic Rides and Prescott really know how to do it right.
