Weird things about the clock and seasons

After getting used to time and the changing of the seasons in SoCal, when I would often plan my rides around the rising (or setting) of the sun, the different time in NoCar is confusing to me (loving that acronym).

For example, today (May 10):

The sun rises :29 later than in SoCal
The day is :09 longer
The sun sets :38 later than in SoCal

It is definitely noticeable - I still get up at about 6:00 AM every day... but here it is still dark!

I grew up in Oregon and I remember it being light well past 9 at night in the summer. Same time zone but I'm guessing Portland is just that much farther west than SoCal.

Also farther north...

In Canada, real Canada, during the longest days if summer it's close to 10:30 at night when it gets fully dark at night. And that is in the most southern portions. There's also the land of the midnight sun once you get North of the Arctic circle...

Further north too. When I lived in Ontario, Canada, the sun wouldn't set to well after 8 and we had twilight to almost 10 in summer. It was great because I could stay out till the street lights came on.

We all know that the further north you go, the more extreme the daylight hours vs dark gets. But we often forget that where you are in a given time zone matters too. If you are in the eastern most part of a time zone you will have earlier sunrises and earlier sunsets than those in the western portion of the same time zone.

Costa Rica freaked me out. Light at 5:30 am and dark at 5:45 pm in June. Close to the equator where there is always 12 hours of light and 12 hours of dark.

Thank you tilted axis!

Think that's bad? China only uses one time zone.

So right now in Beijing, sunrise would be around 5 a.m, but in Urumqi, in essentially Central Asia, sunrise happens two hours later at 7 am...
