URGENT!!! ACTION REQUIRED
Please see message below from RSM councilman Brad McGirr. We may soon be faced with up to 680 homes built on our beloved Chiquita Ridge. This would be terrible for our trails as well as the overall environment here in RSM. Please go to the city website to voice your opposition to this potential disaster to our trails and open land. If you are able, please plan to attend this Wednesday’s 8/11 @ 7:00pm city council meeting. We must let our council know the severity of the opposition to this development. They have a tendency to listen to numbers, make them afraid that they may lose their council jobs if they don’t respond to the will of the majority. Please pass along to anyone else in our community that is in opposition. Let’s turn out in force and, please go to the link below to fill out an opposition form. (you can copy and paste to your browser if the link doesn’t work for you)
Let’s Save the Few Trails We Have!
Here’s the staff report regarding the state’s requiring RSM to include 680 additional homes in our housing plans. As you can see, Chiquita Ridge (next to Canada Vista Park) is a leading contender for this potential development.
As we’ve discussed, absent dire financial needs, I’m adamantly opposed to developing Chiquita Ridge. Our city appreciates and invites email comments at https://www.cityofrsm.org/forms.aspx?fid=102&admin=1..., and speakers are also allowed at this Wednesday night’s meeting.
As we’ve discussed, if you could help me disseminate this information, and ask for neighbors/friends to express their opposition to any possibility of Chiquita Ridge being developed, I’d appreciate it very much.

Sounds like another day at the office. I would recommend to repurpose existing office and commercial areas. Lots of vacant office space these days, and who wouldn’t want to walk downstairs from his bedroom to a cafe with bearded dudes in flip flops arguing over a couple of espressos about how many skid patches their fixies should have? Any resident who prefers to develop the undeveloped/underdeveloped areas is a NIMBY. And the residents already adjacent to the undeveloped areas would NIMBY against a project  so that it NIMBYs elsewhere. Can’t expect too much from those folks though. This is why I try to hug everyone, so that it’s less of a shock in case I become your neighbor. :inlove: The real fun begins when the locals consider half of the 680 units will be “affordable” housing. I think Donald predicted this type of housing product will be the downfall of the American housewife and nuclear family, or something like that. @mike , the last link posted by mtbfan has the details. Graphics start on page 61. Have fun, and good luck!

Mike ~ Chiquita Ridge runs above Tjieras Creek and used to be open for mountain biking (someone correct me if that's not true).
The ridge portion that begins at the skate / dog park (Canada Vista Park) all the way down Antonio to the city Border (at Los Floras) It’s currently open space that the city acquired in a lawsuit against the county.

There has been many plans floated for this space from residential to commercial. I think it is important to keep this as open space. Understand that if the ridge is developed, they will grade the ridge down to level, ruining this beautiful open space.

. Even though, they closed it for us, we have had hope it would one day be accessible again. If nothing else, it will be an eye sore to have housing built on this beautiful ridge. There are too many housing tracks being built in this area, taking away what's left of nature. They deem all these areas "Nature Habitat", yet when the money is right, they don't hesitate for a second to tear all of it down to keep building.

Thanks for that thorough overview! I'll log a comment now.

Please don't allow more reduction of open space in the foothills by allowing housing developments to move forward in this unique area. Doing so lowers the quality of life for every OC resident. Outdoor recreationalists are already squeezed for resources with the unending forest closure and increase in open space users. They need places to recreate! Additionally, the character of RSM is at stake. It's a foothills community and shouldn't become a foothouses community or an extension of Irvine. Thanks for considering these points.

Update! The entire 5 member council voted to remove the Chiquita Ridge option from the potential development options. Option D was their choice for the city staff to pursue in the state application. No current open space will be considered! For now. Thanks to everyone who voiced their opposition and attended the City Council Meeting last night.

Great work, everyone! Thanks for the update and your involvement, @mtbfan.
