Frequently Asked Questions

How tough is this race: Our tag line is not a joke, this is a tough race. It is a mountain bikers race. The first 20 miles are over rocky and steep terrain that requires excellent bike handling skills and upper body strength. We are not telling you this to scare you. We have first time racers that do really well on this course, you will just want to train properly and if you are spending the winter on a trainer add some upper body strength training to feel your best at this early season race.
What bike should I use: The most popular bike for this race seems to be a hard tail 29ner. Full suspension will help you get through the Barrel Cacti and Zen trails easier, but a hard trail may be more efficient when pedaling the Poppy trail and Stucki Springs trail. NUE rules say there is no switching bikes, so choose wisely. As always we suggest pre-riding.
What nutrition is supplied: The nutrition provided at our aid stations is based on our sponsors for that year. We try to have a variety of supplements and real food, but we may not have what you are used to. We usually have some homemade goodies like banana bread, PBJ, or Cookies.
Can I drop a Bag: You will be able to drop bags at 1 or both of the aid stations. Look for the bag drop area near the finish line before the race. These will be transported for you at the start of the race and returned to the venue just after the aid station closes. This is usually 3 pm for Feed 1 and 5 or 6 pm for Feed 2. We recommend only 100 Mile racers drop to Feed 2. Any bags left will be dropped at Red Rock Bicycle and can be picked up there beginning at 10:00 am Sunday morning. Bags not claimed will be disposed of.
Tell me about the post-race meal: We will post details on the vendor under the vendor page once they have been selected and the menu set for the year. The finish line meal always has both meat and vegetarian options. Meals will start at 2 pm and be available until the end of the race.
What is the weather like: This is a spring race, and like any place in the spring the weather can vary greatly. The average high is 68 degrees, low 38 degree and precipitation .93 “. But we have seen temps as high as 85 and as low as 40 so come prepared for anything.
Can people watch the race: Our permits require us to have a closed course ( see side panel). As such most of the course is closed to spectators. This being said there are a couple of places that friends, family and support staff can reach you while you are racing.
• The first 23 miles can be view from the top of canyon view drive in Green Valley
•Support can access the first aid station in Green Valley
•Support can access racers at the bottom of Stucki Spings Road in Santa Clara.
•In case of an emergency contact event staff to reach a participant on course.
Only numbered racers and course marshals are allowed on course with bikes.
LOST and FOUND
Any items left at feed zones or found on the trail will be brought to the results table. If they are not claimed by the end of the race they will be available at red rock bicycle beginning at 10:30 am Sunday – 5 pm Monday after the race. The items will be out side in the area of packet pick-up.

Maybe for the 50. Poke the thread again closer to the registration date :)

It is a tough though thoroughly enjoyable ride.

I will be booking our condo there for that weekend. If there is one trip to get the weekend hall pass for....this would be a good one.

And the 50 is actually 44.

Ya, I like the look of the overly technical route. I also love the scenery in that area. I'm marking it on my calendar as tentative - but with my new job who knows what that might conflict with atm. Need to be there longer to get the lay of the land :)

So I got my pre-race email, and I found out that the "50 miles" loop is actually 46 miles. No big deal.
The next line was a small surprise:
"Total elevation gain for this course is 7604 Ft".
That is 2K more then I expected. Wow!

Initial reactions:
It's going to take a little longer to finish.
I need to check my brake pads!
7604 ft of down hill :-0

It is not fast FR DH....it is more slow techy DH.

And I think the elevation is over estimated. I threw in the towel last year after the second run through ugh Zen Trail at mile 60, then took the road back to the start....and I ended up with 8500'.

I knew the mileage was short. The 100 was only 88 miles and the 50 was only 44-46 miles.

Either way.....you'll have a blast.

zen trail, suicide trail, gooseberry mesa, guacalmole,... all those trails are just awesomeness but the flow and climbs are just so different than what we are used to here in SCal... the miles don't tell the story, its all the rocks and ledges you have to power your way through .... true grit all right! Can't wait to hit it again....

I don't expect to finish the 50. My riding has been Sh!t so far this year, but I'm happy that the first time cut off is AFTER Zen trail. That's a big payoff for me going out there is Zen, and I would have been upset if I had missed that due to a time cut off (sort of like what happened with the Jeep trail at Pioneer Town last year) :)

Don't cut yourself short...

Here is what you need to know.....

There are a couple of technical sections up and down in the first 14 miles....it will prepare you for what Zen has in store for you.

You hit Zen Trail at 13.9 miles/1700' of climbing.....by the end of Zen Trail you are at 19.7 miles/2800'.
After a 1 mile climb up to Bear Claw Poppy(fire road climb)....the next 4 miles are mostly DH/flowy/pump track.
The next 10 miles are a mix of up and down ST and Double Track....some Fire Road.

At mile 33.4 you go back onto a semi technical ST climb....but it's not bad and only 1.5 miles up and down
At mile 36.2 after the aid station you begin the last singletrack section....this one is semi-technical to technical....but much easier than Zen....and it 5 miles long.

Once back at the Aid Station....it is only a few FR/Paved miles back to the start.
