Trails Near Santa Clarita

Ok, I am going to throw this out there. I just got back from riding Viper for the second consecutive week. I was going to head up to Tapia, but just wasn't feeling it. I wanted to ride Los Pinetos, but it's a weekend and there was probably going to be a huge amount of foot traffic. Towsley, same thing, too much traffic.

So, I guess what I want to know, is where else is there to ride relatively close to Santa Clarita. I know I am dreaming, but I'd like to find a place that doesn't have miles of step climbing, you don't have to stop every couple of minutes for incoming foot traffic, crazy locals taking pictures and making threats....

I know of Pig Pharm, 5 Deer, AT, but have never been to any of those. I might give the XC area at Castaic Lake a try (the Over the Hump course was fun).

Any ideas? I know I'd like to check out AT, but not sure if that area is getting much use?

OH, and Viper is not in bad shape, however widow maker and the last couple of chutes are filled with about a foot of sand. No shame, I walked...

Any input would be appreciated.....

Hey Mike, I have not been on my local trail in a couple of months so I can't say to much about traffic, I know it get's more than it used to like 10 riders, I tend to not ride it in the summer months not due to the heat so much as the rattle snakes. I have always said I would be your guide but ,you are one of those early riser rider folks, and our schedules probably would not mesh? You don't know what you are missing for lower AT and XC riding!

I know about the open invitation and appreciate that. I wish I had a better schedule, I know that makes it difficult. At least I am starting to get some riding in. That Camp Nelson trip looked awesome. Very inspirational and motivating for sure. I'm hoping to make a half day of riding in Mammoth with my son next weekend. Probably some of the flatter terrain since I am trying to get him to catch the bug.

I'll get up there one of these days!

There's a few on the Granada Hills side and La Tuna and that's about it. Next is Simi, the San Gabes, mother Santa Monica's...

Hey Mike!
First off! We need to ride together . . . soon! :D
This Forum Page has been update for relevancy.
Second, I have been thinking about this subject for quite a while as well. So my current solution is, I have made a (updated Info:) Forum called "Trails" that has downloadable GPX files for all the rides that get recorded. So as we ride the local trails, I (and anybody else that sends me their GPX file) will upload them to that Forum. You can download the GPX file, find the location, and follow the route they took.

It's real easy to download, usually nothing more than hooking a USB cable to you computer and GPS device and dropping the GPX file in the GPX folder on your device.

Here is some quick instructions for how my Garmin works...

Hope this helps!
