Trail runner in Colorado kills attacking mountain lion

The report that the vicitm killed the cat with his own hands bothers me. I smell some rotten fish here so I will keep an ear open for updates to the story. Its also odd to me that a young adult cat would even consider attacking an adult man. Fishy...

You must not have grown up with a meathead brother who was 3.5 years older and 100lbs heavier than you and liked to torture you for fun.

Sure he broke my arm once and gave me countless other beatings but I also learned how to fight that a-hole back pretty good. One time he was smothering me thinking he was funny in front of his girlfriend and I reached for a pair of pants with a belt in them on the ground, ripped it out of the loops and whacked him upside the head. The buckle prong stuck right in his head and he had to get stitches. Between that and me putting his arm through a window and nearly cutting an artery in his arm he started to back off. Tried to pull his bully Sh!t as adults and we don’t speak anymore.

Adrenaline strength can be crazy so the fact this guy had all kinds of scratches and lacerations and that the authorities were able to trace his story back to the dead cat makes it more plausible than some of the other stories that have turned out fake. Then again, nothing surprises me anymore in this world!

Sad.

I/we have had so many encounters. They have all been incredible, cherished experiences. It makes me sad to think this encounter could have been like that but wasn’t.

Indeed sad to lose such an awesome animal. I wonder if it was sick or injured. Isn’t that usually the case with attacks on humans? Wasn’t the lion that killed Mark R. rabid? Unless the hiker provoked it or we aren’t hearing the full story yet.

I remember when you posted videos of 2 lions in HJ canyon a few years ago and we were camping at O’neil with our 6 week old son. Let’s just say I was a little extra cautious the rest of that stay.

Young adults have often been pushed out of the territory they grew up in with their mother. They often end up in marginal areas or pushed all around. They can get pretty desperate.

There are a good number of lions around our areas. If you want to see a bunch, follow Jerry Springer on Facebook. He sets up trail cams in O'Neill, Arroyo Trabuco etc. He captures lots of lions.

The lion that killed Mark in WR had been displaced by wildfire. So, stressed out and not behaving normally. (Which leads one to think that these scenarios will not be less frequent going forward.)

Human nature is pretty reliable. We react to things we sense – the obvious, really. Cats are some stalking beasts, though. They live for sneaking around, literally. If we only knew how many times we’ve been watched at close range, then we could be really frightened. I assume every feature in cat country could contain a big cat...because they can! Mostly cats want nothing to do with humans, though. If they had an innate taste for us, either my wife, me or both of us would be dead.

My bud at the edge of Coto lets his little dog out at night all the time. I expressed concern over that. But he’s never seen any...

In my community, my neighbors would leave their little barking dog outside - all day and well into the night. Then one night they came home to find bits of their dog all over their backyard. So what happens? The community decides they need to trap and kill all the coyotes.

Now we are being invaded by squirrels - which I have never before had to deal with in 20+ years here in SoCal - and our neighbor got a new dog which they continue to leave out all day and well into the night.

The owners of any barking dog should be drawn and quartered, but first be disemboweled and have their entrails stepped on.

Squirrels, on the other hand, don't make noise and just crunch under the tires if they get too brave...I've always noticed them around the neighborhood. They keep the acorns from sprouting in my lawn. They're useful!!

Wow, your brother story parallels my life also, only difference is he put me through a window and my laseration was near my artery! We don’t speak to this day, in fact he may not even be alive for all I know?

Remind me to tell the story of my boss killing an attacking grizzly bear with a hand-held arrow. True story.

Ed Wiseman - Bear Story

I was a punk 16 year old in rural CO. I worked for Triple E logging and Lange Construction one summer. Both were run by Ed Wiseman (and partners Edwin and Eugene Lange). Ed also operated a hunting outfitter business, taking clients hunting - usually archery elk or bear. Ed was tough as nails. Tall tales kind of stuff. He kinda smelled like a bear.

Reminds me of a plaque I saw in Jackson Hole dedicated to a guy who killed a Grizzly bare-handed by shoving his arm down its throat until it suffocated. He won the fight but lost the arm...

Oh they're here. I've seen tracks. And, yeah, that photo of the lion sitting on the golf course. But even without the kitties, there are coyotes galore. We just moved to Coto a few months ago from Ladera Ranch, and packs of howling coyotes are a nightly occurrence.
