Tragic News out of Las Vegas

I just received a text from a friend who lives in Vegas and said a group of cyclists were hit by a box truck on the I95 just outside of Searchlight. Details are still sketchy, but early reports are 5 were killed (I hope that is not accurate) and at least 4 more were injured.

Please keep the families in your thoughts and prayers.

Yikes....I won't go into details but one of my wife's best friends and co-workers was killed riding on the road in Encinitas the day after Thanksgiving. He was hit by a truck carrying PODS containers and ended up under the rear wheels. Terribly horrific.

I'm so bummed. I grew up in Vegas and still have a bunch of friends there. They have an awesome cycling community too.

Yeah dude, they are a very energetic and welcoming group. Nothing like the mean muggin' you get in SoCal.

I was also led to believe that this might be a full team of cyclists. Details are being withheld until everything is confirmed. Very little news about it out there.

Terrible news indeed. I wonder what was going on with the truck driver. Maybe wind?

Five bicyclists were killed and several other people injured when a box truck drove into their group on U.S. 95 near Boulder City, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

The cyclists were riding behind a safety vehicle, which was also struck, the patrol said.

One of the injured cyclists was airlifted to University Medical Center in Las Vegas, the patrol said. The driver of the safety vehicle was taken to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center, the patrol said.

Michael Anderson, one of the riders who escaped injury, said about 18 cyclists were conducting an annual ride from the M Resort in Henderson.

The crash happened about 9:40 a.m. in the southbound lanes near State Route 165, also known as Nelson Road, officials said.

The driver of the truck, who was not injured, was cooperating with investigators, the patrol said.

The southbound lanes of the highway were closed, and the Highway Patrol advised motorists to avoid the area.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.

5 dead, 4 injured. It was a birthday ride consisting of advanced cyclists doing 130 mile ride. There was a SAG vehicle that saw the whole thing from behind. And, apparently another vehicle that was in front of the cyclists that also got hit by the truck.

I'd like to hope that's true, but I've seen the opposite... 17 year old stoner who mowed down a 12 year old on a bike. 17 year old stoner stayed an *******, and never changed his ways. Didn't miss a beat.

You see that with drunk drivers all the time. Doesn't seem to change the mentality. Drinking/driving or getting high is the priority....the effect on the rest of society doesn't affect them.

I don't expect the idiot to change his ways. Once an idiot, always an idiot. What I meant is that his record is going to follow him around like a thorn in his side for the rest of his life. What that could mean is, difficulty getting employed, protests if he tries to relocate, and so on...

He's dug his own grave here. Whatever negative feedback he get's from this point out is well deserved, IMO.

I have a coworker like that, just by shear luck hasn't knowingly harmed anyone innocent yet. Still buys a tall can and starts drinking while driving on the way home and doesn't see anything wrong with it. And I ride my bike on the same road he takes to work every day.

He is only one out of a million out there doing it daily.
