Tinker Interview

Thanks for posting. Here's my Tinker story. 1992. Winter Park Colorado. I actually entered the beginner class of the xc race. After my "race" I was watching the pros and I saw how strong they were climbing the front hill of the ski area. Then I saw Tinker coming up the hill on his Yeti - in his big ring (there were three rings at that time) I guarantee it wasn't a 32 tooth - probably 44. That's when I knew that pro xc riders were on a different planet.

My XC racing career was considerably shorter than his (I did four races and decided I can't climb fast enough to compete even at the lowest levels). I did have the privilege of being lapped by Julie Furtado in Gunnison!

Tinker is the best! SoCal boy done good!
Wonder why they couldn't name that "other sponsor" from the 90's. C'Dale must put a lot of advertising into that site!

It was amazing to see him in action at the Pioneertown Ride... We hit the aid station at the exact same time! Of course, he had already made the turn around, and was headed back to town... Only 12+ miles ahead of me at that point. :o

He briefly slowed down to pass the station, and asked if it was ok to proceed through. He got the "go ahead" from the race coordinator, and took off in the big ring. I don't think he was breathing hard, and I'm pretty sure he hadn't broken a sweat by that point.

In the 70's I got smoked by Tinker every Friday night at Western-Sports-Arama batting cages and BMX track. He was always humble but in the staging line he would do amazing tricks that would intimidate you before you even had the front wheel on the wood. I never saw him lose...ever. The best anyone in the 13 year old class could hope for was second.

As a relative newcomer to the sport, I love reading these stories. Thank you for throwing that out there!
