The hunt for five tens…..

Been wearing a pair of free riders since 2015. They’ve held up immaculately, but I’ve work through the stealth rubber on the bottom. So my wife said she’d buy me some new shoes for Christmas. Cool
I’ve been wearing 13, but feel like they’ve a bit but too much space at the toes. So went on a mission to try some on. Hoping to upgrade to freerider pro.

went to the REI down the street… nada.

further west into Pasadena, Pasadena cyclery no longer carry them, New distributor adidas bought them.

ok, into old Pasadena. Incycle has one pair on display. Have one pair of regular free riders in a 13.

Tried on some spec 2fo in the clip version, ok, they feel good. Can you get me a pair in regular flat?

no

none in stock.

guess I’ll roll the dice and order the 12.5 pros off adidas site.

Oh.. also called the adidas store at Santa Anita mail… what kind of shoes?
Let me check, 5 minutes later, sorry online only

Hopefully the new pair you ordered holds up. The 5.10s I've bought since the Adidas acquisition have fallen apart within a year or so. Not just the toe peeling away, but the entire sole separating from the shoe. These were Impacts... people don't seem to be having as much issue with other models. Either way I've stopped buying 5.10s entirely.

What have you switched to?

Amazon has crazy good deals on Freerider Pros right now, depending on what colors you want. More than half off on most.

I've switched to Ride Concepts, and been very happy. Almost 1 yr on them, and needing new laces and have small worn spots on the soles from pedal pins, but otherwise good to go.

I agree with ya, 5.10s have gone downhill since the take over. I have a pair of hiking shoes that the sole fell off. I’ve stopped using their climbing shoes for the same reason, shitty quality.

I have only used Freerider Pros since I switched to flats in 2017. Riding 4 days a week, they last me about 2 years. I have never had any of evdog’s issues but mine always wear out in the dole from the pedal pins grinding them away. The left sole always wears out the fastest.

I am closing in on two years with Freerider Pros and no issues. They are holding up great. I only ride about once per week though.
I had Impacts before that, and had the sole delamination issue which I repeatedly fixed with shoe goo.
The Impacts were before Adidas took over. Freeriders after.
Athletic shoes are not supposed to last forever, so 2-3 years seems reasonable to me.

I too switched from Freeriders to Ride Concepts, Hellions to be exact. I found the fit to be very similar to the Freeriders, but they offer a bit more support and protection. Kind of in between the Freerider and the Impact. I found the Freerider Pros to be narrower in the toe box than the Freerider in the same size, and therefore they were not for me.

Since I switched to flats in 2017, I've only ever used Freerider Pros. They last me roughly two years even though I ride four days per week. Although I have never experienced any of Evdog's problems, mine always wear out prematurely due to the pedal pins wearing them down. Always, the left sole degrades the most quickly.

Well… That’s a new one. o_O
