Sunrace Mz90 cassette or GX??

Currently, I have a 1x11 drivetrain. I’d like to get a 1x12. I have GX cranks/BB and I’ve already purchased the new X01 derailleur and X01 shifter. I was going to get the GX cassette too. Apparently, I’ll also need the XD driver body since my free hub is a standard Shimano type.

World Cyclery was trying to sell me on the Sunrace MZ90 cassette, claiming it’s built/pinned just as well (if not a little better due to less weight) as the SRAM GX and it’s already compatible with my Shimano type free hub so I don’t need to buy the additional XD driver.

Any opinions on going with the Sunrace MZ90 cassette?

I have the Sunrace 12 speed cassette (11-50) on the Hightower with a Shimano derailleur. I originally went with it so that I could have Shimano free hubs on both bikes in case I needed to swap wheels. Losing the 10 tooth was not important to me...

It has held up well and I have no complaints... Probably because I've never owned any of the more expensive stuff. :p

I don't follow it that closely, but I remember an article not too long ago about Sunrace working on a lighter version. Not sure if that has come to market yet.

I’d like the drivetrain to operate as smoothly as possible. I opted for SRAM GX cassette and XD driver. It may be all in my head, but I’d like to believe these manufacturers have designed their products to work at their maximum efficiency when paired together.

I dunno.....I run a Wolftooth ring on a KMC chain with a GX cassette. We do this on both my Hightower and Suz's Tallboy. No issues from my garage.

We’ve gotten perfect performance so far from Sunrace 11-sp 11-46.

@Bluesrider, you might have a tough row to hoe getting people here behind e13 cassettes. I own two, neither of them are in use now. One was warrantied and the replacement has the same issues. Voodoo Tom, same experience. I couldn’t wait to get the damn thing off my bike after listening to it creak for last week of the AZT. Maybe they changed the design for 12-sp. One can only hope, because their design on the 11-sp is a failure.

That is true to a point, I have an Orgin8 chainring with a YBN chain, GX Cassette and a Box Drivetrain and it shifts perfect. I don’t think I could get it any better if it was a paired system.

I have about 5 rides now and so far smooth, quiet, and quick shifts. I guess time will tell and for what its worth I did pair it with a E13 crank and chainring. Set up is different with this cassette, its on a XD drive but uses a pinch bolt to lock on versus threading on.

Just curious... @mike (and I think @Voodoo Tom ) Is this the same attachment mechanism that your cassettes used? Wondering if they have change things up?

I'm happy with my 12 speed Sunrace on a Shimano free hub... Maybe a year in? I'll buy another when it wears out. But I'm also not the pickiest when it comes to shifting. Anything with more than one gear is bound to have issues... :D

My last one had that pinch bolt. It was supposedly a new and improved design. I’m sure I voiced my true opinion several times...:devilish::mad::poop: Ultimately a few hundred miles in I decided to throw in towel and swear off anything and everything they build.

Haha... :geek:

I had the old and the revised pinch bolt versions. Both worked the same (shitily). If I was a racer I might settle for the sacrifice for the 9t cog. I'll take a quiet 11-xx cassette over 9-xx that chronically develops a creak. Good luck, Todd!!

My next cassette purchase will be a Sunrace. Tested with success on the weez's 11-sp GX drive.
