Stolen bike...

Hey guys, if any of you know of a website that you can report a stolen bike and check if someone is trying to sell one that is stolen, would like to check one since the deal sounds pretty good, one of my friends told me if I think a Santa cruz 5150c 2013 or newer(he doesn't know) is good at a price of $800. the bike is in 9 out of 10. So I told him to be very cautious since the price seems to good to be true... [emoji19]

You'd have to be crazy to buy a 5150.

However a 5010c for $800 is probably a stolen bike. I do not know how to go about verifying if the bike is stolen or not other than asking the seller to show you proof of ownership.

Have your friend meet the guy and invite some rough riding cops to meet you. Maybe have the cops show up a few minutes later so your buddy has time to smack that bastard around first. Grrr!

well, I asked because I dont remember where, but I read a post where OP said that he reported his bike in a website and if you came across a bike deal too good to be true to check the website and you will be able to find info on stolen bikes reported by the owners, and as for my friend, well his brother in law is interested in the bike, and him not knowing nothing about bikes is thinking is getting an awesome deal, I told my friend that if the owner or someone thats recognize the bike is going to probably hit him hard and call the cops, and he will be losing his money and getting a ticket for buying stolen goods, but in the end, hope he comes to his senses and dont buy the bike, my .02 cents.

Damn... I showed my east coast naïveté! It was the "Baker Act" in Florida. I saw it used many times... Along with its cousin, the Marchman Act, which was along the same lines, but had to have a chemical dependency component.

5150 sounds better...

I'm sure if you ask to verify the serial number or any proof of ownership, the guy is going to stop responding.

I think the best course of action might simply to send his information to the local police. There might already be a report out on it.

Try "Bikeindex.org" if you get the serial number.

Yes, this^^.
https://bikeindex.org/ is a great resource, but relies on critical mass/crowd-sourcing the bike info.
I encourage everyone to register their current bikes on there and add pictures of the bikes, components and serial numbers.

There's a stolen one out there:

How do you even tell? It could be a good deal, like this complete TB LTc for under $2000.
