Specialized Tires WTF

OK, so I really liked my Captain I had in the rear. Seems to have good climbing traction, and rolls along fair. So when it got worn a bit and finally a sidewall tear I decided to get a pair of special-ed tires: a new captain 2.2 and a purgatory 2.3

So I mount the Purgatory and look down WTF  The 2.3 looks smaller than the 2.2 ??? I measured and YEP sure as shiat. These are on Roval Control carbon wheels I think 22 mm inside width.

I know people always say that different manufacturers measure differently, but I'd expect a single brand to have some consistency!

In all fairness, though... I had very good luck with the Purgatory in the past.

I'd still take the newer Purgatory over the new one. Rolls better, and has better bite in corners (I only use them as a front tire). Also, I believe that tires 'grow' over time. Measure that new Purgatory in a few months, and see if the casing has relaxed a bit since measuring it when new.

My Maxxis tires measure closer to their advertised width when measured by the tread than when measured by the casing. My Ikon's casing (29x2.2) is probably the biggest of all my tires, even compared to the 2.4 Ardent on my 26, and my 2.3 DHR2, because it's on a 24mm ID rim, compared to 18 (+split tube from ghetto tubeless making it even narrower) and 21mm respectively. There are exceptions though... oddly enough, the well worn Ikons only measure 2.1 tread edge to edge, despite their casing ballooning to about 2.3. Can't expect measurement standards with tires, I guess.

Same issue goes for stem lengths. I replaced a 90mm EC70 stem with -17deg with a Syntace Flatforce 66 on my HT and there really isn't much difference in length or placement. Measured some center of where the steerer gets clamped to center of where the handlebar gets clamped, and the measurements don't come close to advertised length. Only exceptions are the CNC'd stems I have like the Thomson on my Yeti.

I guess the the measurements are merely estimates at best, with a wide tolerance, due to the imprecise mfg methods.

you would just think that two tires by the same manufacture, same S-works-same model -year etc..
that the one marked 2.3 would be BIGGER than the one marked 2.2 NOT SMALLER

oh well, no complaints otherwise really. they hook up pretty well. just had a wonderful ride chasing the sunset through golden fields of grass surrounded by large oak trees. I just got this weird thing about my front tire being more skinny than the rear :|
