Anybody listen to music on rides? I know, it's not recommended but I drop one earbud on descents now.

I listen for rattlesnakes.
Me too, especially when riding in a new place, because the places I ride often there are no ssssnakes... but usually use 1 earphone when solo riding or the phone on the pocket with music when group riding, what a mix of spanish and english music.... a sad note one of my best riding buddys nephew was bitten by a rattle a week ago in sycamore park in Riverside and died on sat. I talked to my friend over the phone but when I get the chance will ask him the details...

Please do not get the OP started on paranoia of critters on the trail.

I hear the voices in my head. I just don't listen to them.

Only time I listen to music is when riding solo at night on a climb. The sounds of critters scrambling through the bushes in the dark makes me nervous. Hear no evil...
On super long rides I sometimes ride with just one ear bud.

Actually I think I finally got over my fear of mtn lions. I ride in the pre-dawn hour now with a head light. I still ride in the trail in my backyard where I saw P-41 (or perhaps his relative?) I recently saw some tracks in my backyard trail and now I'm able to identify cougar prints (leading toe, no nails, larger size, etc.)

We also do have rattle snakes and one was in our backyard (literally), seems they like to chill out on hot stones, it was coiled up. It moved away before humane society snake guy from Pasadena showed up. He said the grey/black rattlers are particularly aggressive and stay away from those.

I'm sorry about the death of the boy, my rattle snake book stated that deaths from rattle snake bites are extremely rare, however, I've also heard that hospital charges can be exorbitant due to the cost to manufacture the anti-venom.

In fact I've been seeing ppl hiking and even running in the pre-dawn (dark) w/o lights and one guy a few times descending with no helmet. ???

Preferably not some clueless schmuck blasting noise that he thinks is music.

To each his own as they say. Music is a form of art. And the consumption and satisfaction thereof is highly subjective. NIN has a lot of noise (e.g. eraser). It may be garbage to you but then it ultimately doesn't really matter. Classical music is supposed to increase your IQ but I don't care for it. Miles Davis is better. :)

I tried completely no music one time downhill. A flock of what sounded like 10-20 birds got scared and flew away from the bushes. Which of course scared me. No crash. The music helps me focus.

Now the jackass level: when I first started, I pulled out my iPhone from left pocket while braking with right hand on downhill. It wasn't enough stopping power and I slammed the left brake with the iPhone in hand which bent the phone. Then I almost went over the edge into the canyon/ravine. Jumped off the bike 1 foot from the edge. Adrenaline rush (wrong style). Apple store gave me new phone (but I had to be smart about the communication). That's how I learned to ALWAYS keep both hands on the handlebars on downhills.

What is the difference b/n a canyon and ravine? Also, I've noticed some severe temperature fluctuations in La Tuna Canyon (and probably other trails), where it feels like the temp drops by 10-20 degrees. How does this happen?

Not to mention can't stand the dipshits who come cruising up the trail with their music blasting out of the back of thier packs....just because you wanna listen to YOUR music, doesn't mean the rest of us do. :stop: :gag:
Yep I've seen this before. Very annoying.

But that's better than a man running at you with his arms straight up holding a long stick. Emerging in the dark. He had no lights, I did. Freaky. Still have no clue how these guys run in fire roads in the dark.

Actually what pisses me off is the trash they leave behind. Esp. broken glass. But then again, broken glass doesn't seem as bad for the tubes as goatheads.
