So tired of the fullerton loop....

Anyone recommend a trail I could hit after work? Around north OC? I've heard about blackstar but don't want to try out a new trail solo.

Santiago Oaks be great solo. Lots of traffic so it's safe. Pretty easy but still a step up from fully loop. Go to Irvine Regional Park and follow everyone else.

Be careful and make sure wherever you ride isn't protected land. If a ranger catches you after dark they could confiscate your bike and/or give you a fat ticket.

What time is after work? i live in la habra and can show you around turnbull canyon on Mon's and Wed's
i'm off of work by 2:30pm. PM me if ya wanna ride!

Yeah, our secret dirt for North Orange County is Powder Canyon. My routes there can range from about 7.7 miles and 1300 feet of climbing, to 15 miles and 2800 feet of climbing. It's much nicer than the Fullerton Loop. To get to the trailhead, take Harbor north, OVER the Puente Hills, and then turn left on Fullerton near the water plant. Park on the side of the road. This link might get you a map: www.strava.com/activities/178440868 It's been a couple months since I've ridden there. Maybe I'll go in the morning once it warms up.

Thanks for the suggestions. I work till 530pm M-F but a I would love to take a ride on either Turn Bull or Powder canyon. Last thing I want is a ticket and for my bike to be impounded.

Blackstar......you can't get lost.

So besides the loop, what other trails can you ride 24 hours a day w/o getting a ticket? I know Aliso Woods is off limits....

ALL COUNTY PARKS are CLOSED from SUNSET to SUNRISE

Forest lands are open 24/7

Blackstar/Skyline/Harding TT/Holy Jim/Trabuco/Santiago TT/Luge/West Horsethief/Indian Truck Trail/San Juan Trail/Los Pinos/Eagle Road/Bedford Road/Maple Springs(currently closed due to fire)/Silverado Motorway(currently closed due to fire).

So lots of trails.

Just a suggestion...
I have started a free GPX Download over on the Magazine Here: http://imtbtrails.com/magazine/?p=942

If MTB'ers out in the OC Area would consider sending me their .GPX files I will set them up for Free Download as well.
It's really easy to upload a file on a Garmin and then you can follow the trail as you ride it to learn new trails...pretty cool!

I've been wanting to do this next week..what are the recommended routes? I'm looking at Google Map right now. Powder Canyon Trail..Black Walnut?

Is SchbarumTrail Ext switchbacks?

Looks like SOT will take you all the way up to the Schbarum Park? (Is this all uphill?) Perhaps take this and then meet up with the Schbarum Trail _> Skyline -> Powder Canyon Trail -> back down?

This time of year you won't be alone on Blackstar ... it's the go to place now that the time has changed.

Blackstar's cold. And climby. And there's no ST. How's the Ladera Ranch stuff. Don't know that area that well so am sketchy about riding there at night alone.

If you can click that strava link, that will show you the Standard Route. It goes up the canyon to the high point, then left up the fire road past the radio tower, then the fast downhill to Schabarum, then up the switchbacks and across to Fullerton Road. There are some extra credits you can throw in, but not many. If you're really adventurous, do it doggie style (the standard route backwards). Only rarely do you see people doing this, as it's a steep climb reserved for real hammerdogs.

Powder's trails are not as diverse as Turnbull's, but it's better than the Loop. Expect your ride to last about as long as the Loop. My schedule is pretty flexible, so if you need someone to show you around, PM me. Friday afternoon and Saturday are out this week.

True, but would more more prefer to ride out there than the Loop.

Plus it is a better training ride, and there are other options to go much longer and much more elevation gains.

Hey, Mikie.
I went out today with the intent of making a gpx of Powder Canyon for our local folks who need some new dirt. Got the file, got a couple pics from rides gone past, but there are a couple glitches to first work out.

First, I couldn't figure out how to navigate my web browser to find to the routes. I searched for and found this thread, followed the link... and couldn't download any of the existing routes. Apparently my login/password are unacceptable.

Advice?

No Prob . . . . Rob S.

Then open your email and attach the file and send it to me. I will add it to the "Download" Page!

This is BY FAR the easiest way to get a .gpx file. Otherwise you will pull it out of your "History File" and have to convert a .txp file to a .gpx file using a website called: http://www.gpsies.com/convert.do

A lot of extra steps when you can just pull it off of STRAVA or Garmin Connect.

Let me know if you have questions! :D

I'll PM you my email address as I am wanted in almost as many states as rossage and herzalot! ;)

I have had a challenge with the "Bridge" Plugin that bridges your Username and Password to Wordpress. I'm working it now...

You may note it's early in the morning on a school night.  I believe that you can now follow that link to the .gpx files and down load now here: http://imtbtrails.com/magazine/?p=942

I believe I have fixed the login bridge between the Forum and the Magazine, occasionally having to log back in on the magazine.
Because we changed your Username it would not let you in. I downloaded a plugin that allows me to change a subscribers username so I have done so for you. Let me know if this works now for you...Thanks!

I'm riding whiting-luge-whiting tomorrow.
I'll try to remember to strava, then add to site so there is some OC representin!
apparently strava isn't keen on me going back past 60 days on free membership, or i'd just post up now.

Hey that's awesome Dan. Just email me the file and I will set up a download. This could really be a cool archive for those that are looking for new Dirt!

Thanks!

Groovy. I just downloaded Golden Eagle. Some day soon I'll ride it.

I have a bunch of gpx files of local trails on my computer, I just need to sort through them to figure out which are actually mine and which are someone else's.
Here are three that you can grab and put into your collection. I'm sure these are my own gpx recordings. If I had your email address, I'd send them that way. If you have any problems, let me know.

San Juan, Up & Down https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/511 ... uan%20.gpx
Monroe Truck Trail, Up & Down https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/511 ... 0Trail.gpx
Powder Canyon, Standard Route https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/511 ... Canyon.gpx

Excuse my stupid, but GPX files are only for Garmins?? Or can they be viewed on a PC?? I am trying to collect trail maps and directions.

It's a GPS exchange format. You can download the above files and drop them into Google Earth. I import them into MotionX GPS, an app on my iPhone. It's GREAT for routefinding in unfamiliar areas. More later, as I'm meeting someone to ride in 20 minutes.

Mikie! That Golden Eagle gpx that I downloaded came across with an xml extension. I don't know if it's useful that way, but for me, I had to get rid of the extension before it was usable.

Adios.

Hey Guys, I think this is an awesome thing we will be perfecting over time. We will continue to develop this and come up with training so that it's clear how o use and experience. It's real easy once understood. I just need to figure out how to make the download system work perfectly. Gotta go to work, I will work on this over the weekend!

Later Awesome People!!!

Just did this today..fantastic trails..actually I would say PC is much more diverse and seems to have a much better rhythm and flow..a good balance between climbing and rewards for downhill section. (Going to post a RR later today) Your right Rob, it is better than Floop..and even digestable for a first timer..looking forward to going back again in a few weeks..I have to say the downhill singletracks were in much better shape and wider..and no hikers in numerous downhill section.

I'm planning on Powder this saturday. Thanks for the trail map! I was riding black star last Sunday and man what a climb. I think my gps says it was almost 8 miles up hill.
