I took the family on a night hike once on the Santiago Truck Trail. Nice warm August night.
Got to the trailhead and realized I grabbed the pack w/out the flashlights.
Told the family screw it, the moon is full, we'll be fine. They asked about snakes - I told them I've never seen a snake at night.
Off we went with my Australian shep in the lead.
About 600 feet up the trail we suddenly hear the rattle.
Oh crap, we all call the dog. He's smart and came right back to us.
Using the cell phone flashlight, we found a little 1 1/2 footer. He was more scared than we were.
He hightailed it off the trail after a few stomps.

I do not know what kind of rattler this is, but it was red. Initially stretched completely across the trail as I entered STT from Modjeska (the little singletrack entrance just past the gate). He slithered into the bushes before I could get the camera out.View attachment 27074
That is a Red Diamond and a very bright one, at that.

Red Diamonds are common throughout the OC all the way to the coast. They are also common in the Coachella Valley and to the South of there.

Came across one on Coyote weekend before last that refused to move. Wouldn't even stop rattling! Thinking she had eggs or young nearby? Held up a ton of traffic, finally had to bushwhack a bit to get around it. Easily rattled 5 minutes straight.

Last season I surprised a younger one on the paved path after the Luge. He actually struck at me and bounced off the rear wheel!

Well, yeah. What's the big deal?

I have had many rattlers for pets in my time.

I didn't choose my username without reason. :D
yep there are good ways and wrong ways to handle a snake. I should have kept that Mojo Green I almost stepped on as I got out of my truck in socks and was switching into my steel toes, thank goodness it was early morning so it was a bit stiff. I ended up throwing it out into the creosote.
