Sedona Trail Suggestions

Going on a road trip between Christmas and New Years and have a day to ride in Sedona. What are some good trails that would be <15 miles and <2000 feet of climbing? I can ride down just about anything, but suck at climbing and am out of shape. I hate cholla and can't make it up anymore. I'd rather climb mustard, 3Bs, luge than cholla or anything technical. Don't want to do anything too crazy downhill since I'll be by myself and my wife will kill me if I get hurt and ruin the road trip. So nothing that requires a FF helmet (I wear one down 5 Oaks and Car Wreck).

In the Village of Oak Creek you can park by Red Agave and ride right out of the back of the Resort and hit a bunch of trails. Slim Shady to HT and cross under the road, hit Little Horse and up to Chicken Point. That would be about 11 miles and 1200 as I remember. Some climbing but nothing brutal and one heck of a view from up there.
You could also head up and do Broken Arrow off of Morgan Road that will get you up to CP also.
I could go on for days of small loops that meet your criteria, but I usually spend 4-5 days looping things together.
Munds to Hangover from Schnebly Hill Road is great, but again considerable climbing and may not be the best route alone.

Over off of Dry Creek , west side of town, Deadmans Pass and Mescal is a great ride also.
Best to stop at Bike and Bean or Over the Edge and get the scoop from them. One day is hard and depends which road you are taking into town. If you have never been there, it will leaving you wanting to stay.
Sorry can’t compare to the trails you mentioned, never rode those.
Have fun and remember the RR! :)

+1 BBJohn nailed it. You hit up Slim Shady and you will have a great day of riding in Sedona.

Definetly hit up Bike and Bean. They have some great trail maps at that shop, plus the trailhead for a lot of the fun single track is just one or two blocks from their shop.

My crew (about 12 of us) will be out there during that time, as we have the last 9 years in a row. Warning: Do not ride Hangover if it has rained or snowed the ice out there is death. Any slickrock trail in the shade in Sedona can be black ice in the AM or if in the shade and the temps are low which they are every night. Mescal, Highline are the slickrock exceptions as they get morning sun. Weather looks good for us that week.

Dean

Thanks for the tips and warning. I'll probably go for chuck wagon and mescal after picking up a map from a shop.

That is a great ride, throwing Aerie would put you over mileage/vert wise that you wanted but would be a good addition. Rode that area for the first time last year on our trip. Julie hiked up into the wilderness area and she had the key to the truck. When I got done with the Deaadmans, Chuckwagon, Mescal & Aerie she was still out so I went and rode Mescal again it was that good.

Dean, great point we are there in April every year so ice isn’t an issue. Hadn’t thought about that, but ice on either side of Hangover wouldn’t end well.

Great post! Now I won't have to make a new one when I try to plan a Sedona trip.

PWE - looks like we are in the same boat - slow going up and can ride down just about anything.

Give us a great ride report with lots of photos and things you wish you knew before you left. :)

I can tell you what you need to know before you leave. First off you will not want to come home. The dirt in Sedona is made for MTB tires. The slickrock traction is crazy. Don't fall into the cactus. Start saving so you can have a second home there.

Dont forget the "HangOver" in Sedona's Red Dirt ;) . Thank you! Robin of mikie & me. aka mtbshadowman and the cookie girl
