Santa Cruz sold to Pon. If anybody cares...

Dutch conglomerate adds a major mountain bike brand to its portfolio. Pon Holdings, a Dutch conglomerate that owns several bike brands including Cervélo, Focus and Gazelle, has purchased California-based Santa Cruz Bicycles.

I just read the same thing!

Another article... And I imagine a few people on here will care! Things probably won't change in the short term, but you have to imagine that they have a long term strategy in mind, and that usually means "budget bike".

The next Salsa or Cannondale, but that's not necessarily a putdown!
QBP Salsa puts out some great bikes IMHO (Fargo, El Mar, Vaya are all on my shortlist), and C'dale isn't any more watered down than it was when building in PA.

Santa Cruz bikes were already made in Taiwan same as Specialized and Trek, so not a huge change there. Wait and see attitude in regards to the direction they head.

Still want a Tallboy CC and 27.5 HIghball something bad...

I am wondering why NHS did not put more money into the bikes. Why sell off the bike division? Only time will tell what happens to them. Hope its not like Fisher, Klein or any other small company that was bought out and put out of business.

PON is actually owned by a shadow company through Specialized. They bought Santa Cruz for the express purpose of putting them out of business, a la Boeing's purchase of McDonnell Douglas.

Oh crap, I actually can't do this with a straight face. :P

I guess going carbon has something to do with this. Carbon frames just cant be made in the USA at this time. We once had a bunch of laid off aero space workers to weld frames. That is over.

I have a Turner Czar and a Turner RFX the aluminum RFX is the better bike. The Czar has been nothing but endless creaks...I hate creaks. I may not be buying another carbon frame. Many bike companies just seem to be changing models all the time to get people to buy the latest little change. Santa Cruz did that and it annoyed me.

This topic makes me wonder, who are the independent builders anymore? Intense, Turner, Pivot? How about Niner?
I mean, yeah, technically Trek and Specialized are not independent, but that's not quite what I was looking for... :-)

Well you still have Ventana, Foes, Kona and lots of other medium size companies that I cannot think of right now.

Define independent? If you mean small companies specializing in mt. bikes, let's add Yeti, Knolly, Transition, Evil, Norco, Cove (are they still in business?), Banshee, Smellsworth, Polygon, Mondraker, Orange, Bionicon (do they still exist?), Moots, Durango, YT, Lenz, NS, Canyon, La Pierre, Commencal, Morewood, DeVinci, and probably 100 more...

Edit: Nuke Proof, Madison Saracen, Bergemont... (I am sure more names will come to me as I watch the WC DH tomorrow morning.)
Cube, Focus, Does Felt count? No - they make road bikes too.

Yeah, guess that was kinda' vague... I meant sorta' mid-size companies like Santa Cruz.
The SoCal ones popped into my my head, but yeah, guess there are a lot more! :-)

Maybe it's been a long time coming? They started selling lower end SC bikes at Sport Chalet a few years ago.

Shoot, nobody told Greg Minnaar that Santa Cruz was sold...

Thanks for spoiling the results.

Oh...uh.... spolier alert! I tell you what, I'll change mine, then you change yours. Save the others.

Hey wait - you don't give a rats behind about no stinkin' WC DH, do you?

Based on the other thread (WC DH), I was right - nobody cares. :(

Congratulations Greg Minnaar! Greatest DH racer of all time with 18 World Cup wins (plus 3 World Championships and 3 World Cup overall titles). I can't imagine how many times he's been on the WC podium. He is amazingly consistent and very, very smooth. And easy on the eyes too - whoa - wait, what? I mean, my ummm, my wife thinks he's attractive - I wouldn't know. I don't comment on such things. I think I'll go watch some Nascar now...

All the other riders looked a little sketchy on the track.
Minnaar looked like it was just another easy ride.
The boy got skills!
