Hope Pro 2’s 40T laced to WTB Frequency i-25 rims

Just got this set of wheels built over at Buena Park Bikes by Hugo got a few months on the set now and could not be happier. This is the second set of wheels Hugo has built for me first set were some novatac wheels.

Front
The all new Pro ll hub has sealed cartridge bearings and can be swapped from 20mm to QR
Weight – 180g

Rear
The all new Pro2 40T this hub features a one piece 7075 aluminum rotor body and pawl carrier. Four pawls engage into a 40 tooth steel ratchet 9 degree engagement which is fixed into the hub shell and is sealed with a frictionless, non contact labyrinth seal. The axle runs on four cartridge bearings. The hub shell is machined from a solid billet of 2014 T6 aluminum.
Weight: 295g

Rims
WTB Frequency i-25 team rims. I went with the Frequency over a Flow do to the I-Beam construction in the rim and a lower price point. The rim fetchers 4D drilling aid in lateral strength, UST compliant inner rim profile.
Weight: 512g
Hole: 32
Inner Rim Width: 25mm
Rim size: 27.5

I’m running this set on a 2014 Intense Tracer 275. 15mm front axle and 142x12 in the rear.
160lbs all mountain/ trail rider

The 4 pawls and 40t drive gives a solid engagement the 40t is quieter than the older 24t drive but still has a good sound (I like loud hubs). I run a XT cassette on aluminum free bodies do to there are fewer sections to gouge into the aluminum free hub body. The engagement feels solid and you really feel like you can hammer down without having problems. There is no noticed drag out of the hubs and they spin freely. The wheelset is incredible stiff and I like the 25mm with over my older 23mm with. I feel the front wheel is planted and bits little more in cornering at a reasonable more weight over the 23mm. Tires mounted up nicely with a small compressor and I like the UST/TCS the tire locks into the rim bead really tightly. After a few months of riding I threw the wheels on stand and checked their trueness and tension both in excellent shape after some good thrashing.

Over all if you don’t want a wheelset you have to baby around at a reasonable weight and wont brake the bank I would check out the new hope hubs and wtb frequency rims.

I hope the newer rear hubs are a hit stronger.....I grenaded a pawl spring in less than 500 miles on a Pro II.

I think that was a good call. I have the WTB i25 laced to Chris King ISO's and love them: http://imtbtrails.com/magazine/?p=843

My rear rim has taken a pretty good hit and I want to bend it back out but a little afraid it may weaken the rim there.

This is a very nice product review, you did a great job on this!
The only problem I see is your rider is 160lbs where my rider comes in at 205lbs! ;)

Great Job!!!

I've had mine for close to a year and so far no problems. Re-lubed it last weekend and it shows no signs of wear.

Great review, I have been on Hope 2's/mavic for 3 years. Once I installed the steel axle tube on rear hub they have been bullet proof.
XT on aluminum freewheel is a good setup.

Re: Review: Hope Pro 2’s 40T laced to WTB Frequency i-25 rim

On my old bike I had a set of i23's laced to hope hubs

Current bike (650b) came with crappy sram hubs and lame sun-ringle non-tubeless rims,I immediately switched out the rims to i25's. Love those rims, strong but lightish, easy to build and true. Want to get another set of hope hubs to replace the sram soon.

Re: Review: Hope Pro 2’s 40T laced to WTB Frequency i-25 rim

Nice review, and your bike looks dialed with the CCDBa and the Pike. The red hubs give it a splash of color, which, as we all know, is far more important than how they actually perform.

HOWEVER - although you have most of the trend boxes checked (wide bars, short stem, 650b, dropper post, Pike, CCDB...) how dare you run a front derailleur! You, sir, are henceforth relegated to keeping your bike out of sight until you comply with the trend.

Hah! Don't listen to herzalot Mr. knight! :o
I too prefer function over fashion! 8-)

That; my friend . . . . is a sweet ride!

Lol hezalot I run a single on the ht but I put in some bigger climbs and rides not to run the front derailleur and 2x gearing for me.i toy with going to the single but i can't see the advantage of it over my set up now. But the red dose look good and adds 10 horse power for sure.

EXACTLY - on both counts!!!!

Here are words that have probably never been spoken by a mountain biker at 9,000' of altitude or higher...
"I wish I didn't have those extra gears to help me climb! They sure are weighing me down." The good part about the 1x trend is now I can also reel in my friends on flat sections of trails, since I have a whole lot more top end too.

Has Crank Bros reversed their logo yet, btw? They have the big ring on the wrong side. Mountain bikes don't look like this any more:
They now look like this:

I withdraw this statement. Started having shifting issues a few weeks ago and thought maybe I had bent my derailleur hanger. Finally put the bike on the stand and noticed the cassette was up against the frame. Pulled the wheel and checked the hub and it was loaded with shrapnel. Hoping to get it warranted.
