Tour of Utah - major fail. Disc brakes should soon be de rigeur. 21 seconds into the video, and then right after that two more into the motorcycle. Dayum!!!

Wrong line, way too much speed, and he locked up the back tire for a nice fishtail!

I'm guessing he wasn't familiar with the course?

Same crash from a different angle:

Yeah, not sold on Discs for road bikes. They wont make up for lack of skills or poor judgment. Rim brakes are pretty good and road bikes are pretty light.
Not much tire in the road to grip with.
Now if it was wet pavement, you may have a case.

I think eventually disks will take over, but I'm quite happy with modern rim brakes on the road bikes. I recently replaced a set of mid-80s rim brakes with a more modern set from Tektro. The difference is night and day... It makes me wonder how crazy I was in my younger days, bombing down the foothills of the Appalachians!

I went with Tektro, because they make brakes that will mount to older road frames with no issue. I don't know of any other manufacturers that still have the old style mount. And, these guys had everything:

I say catch 22 while riding on wet pavement. Discs work great in the rain however if you are not familiar with how strong they are you will go down. I rode my road bike over to the JRA shop ride on Sunday where I jumped on an adventure bike with the discs. Night and day difference is an understatement. Personally I want discs because my motorcycles have had them for the last 35 years that I have been riding them.

I guess I should also add that at 230 I need all the brake I can get!
