Price check for first bike!

Going to be moving to the SoCal area soon and have been looking for a bike. Came across a 2013 Trek Stache 7 with a stansflow mk3 and a dt swiss hub on the rear wheel. Bike does not come with pedals. Got the price down to $700 but not sure if this is a good deal and if I should keep looking elsewhere. Any advice appreciated.

It's a fair price. I'd look for something with Shimano brakes, though.

Switching out and putting Shimano XT brakes in there would be an option no? Also, when replacing brakes do you need to replace the rotors too?

As stated don’t be too picky or nothing will ever be good enough. Start with what is given you. Have to mention a lot people have preferences in parts. The OP doesn’t mention what brakes are on there. Could be Shimano.

I'll play the other side of the coin... The Avid Elixirs (especially the 1s) have a bad reputation. My first full suspension bike came with them, and I got about 4,000 miles out of them- mostly trouble free. I never had a problem with them... Until I tried better. But, that's the nature of this hobby. There's always something better... We never stop upgrading.

If the bike you're looking at is in good shape, it can take you just about anywhere in SoCal...

The rear wheel is also a big step up from the factory wheel.

I had those brakes on a 2013 Giant Reign and they are indeed horrible. Maybe it was because I was still a new rider and braking too much, but about 2/3 way down the Luge they would overheat and stop working. Also there's little to no modulation. It was complete on or off which led to a few OTB crashes.

You could switch out the brakes but you would be spending more money. I'd find a bike that has them already.

Some rotors are are interchangeable between brakes types, and some aren't.

I suggest not making your entire bike purchase decision based off of the brand of brakes.

Then again I don’t follow the current trends, like having a heavier bike makes you cooler.

Agree.....don’t buy a bike based on brakes, they only slow you down, and we all know they s whole sport is all about how fast you can go.


Also, some bike is better than no bike.

Of course it does...the more you sweat, the greater the cooling effect....
