PCE shuttling?

I took an Uber to the top from Vons last year. It cost me around $ 70.00 for the full size van. I tipped him well on top of that. He laid down his bench seat to fit my bike. I rode PCE by myself that day. It took me a couple of tries to get an Uber to take the fare. " They " have to turn on their system and then decide if they want the fare. He got most of his business transporting people to and from the airport. I think it's a crap shoot whether you will get picked up like I did. If I couldn't get a ride to the top I would've peddled from the bottom to make a loop. Last year I was out of sync with Crazy Bear shuttles due to work so I did what I could to ride PCE-

Ummm gas + time. Fair price I'd say. But I get that one may not have $45 to piss away on a shuttle up the hill (or $90 if paying for your lady too).
The Nuggets ended up paying CrazyBear $67 for a ride to Wildhorse from Hangar 24 because we weren’t able to fill the van. Totally worth it to drag a driver out of bed to meet us at 5:45am an hour from his house. I guarantee $120 of the gross cost was spent on gasoline, plus time (which is the most expensive), plus cost of ownership, and G even loaded and unloaded our bikes and took my extra gear to the shop for pickup later.
If I were in superior shape, I’d bash shuttling too, but its expense a great compromise for me these days.

Those of us heading home via 74/371 don't save time paying for a shuttle service if we set up the self shuttle correctly. With capacity to drive all riders up the hill twice you don't do an extra trip up and down the hill to retrieve....just drop off drivers on your way past Pine View on the way home.

The extra vehicle needed for the self-shuttle will burn a tank of gas from San Diego at $60-70. If 4 of us carpool in a single vehicle and pay $50 each to shuttle that's $200, or $250 if we can squeeze in 5. That's 3-4x the cost. No point in paying more if you're not going to save time.

Crazy Bear was charging $25-30 for a few years. That was worth it for 2-3 of us, borderline with 4 and no longer worth it for 5 ( and not at all worth it for me solo....moto self shuttle cost $2 in gas :sneaky:)

The exception was the afternoon ride-back-up shuttle. That one was worth it because it saved us 3/4 hour driving in the morning and we could leave 2 hrs later. That's about the only option I'd pay $50 for and still wouldn't be happy about it.

You could drive up with both of you and ride PCE, then bike back up after to retrieve the car while GF naps : )

That's what I do, I just bring the 500 out on the rack along with the bikes. I will say though, the first person that tells my wife it doesn't take 2.5 hours to ride my moto up, load it onto the truck and drive back down, is getting punched in the gut. The extra 1.5 hours I have milling around on the moto, up to toro peak and exploring random trails in the area is golden. A bit tough on the body after a PCE shuttle, but that's when I just let the throttle do the work :P

Not sure the girl would be happy being left to nap on the sidewalk for a few hours while I climb back up.

Unless one of my friends mentions to me about going, I will probably just pass riding the PCE with her. Plenty of other things to ride still. I will continue to self shuttle.

Bring one of her friends as your shuttler. She can drive up the mountain and drop you and your girl off, and then she can shoot back down and go shopping. The Palm Springs area is a girl's paradise where shopping/day spas is concerned. When you two get down off the mountain, text or call her to pick you. She will probably grumble a little bit for disturbing her from her shopping coma, but at least you'll have a ride home.

:Roflmao

She's not that type of girl.

We both have about an equal amount of friends, which is near zero. We are not social people.

She would be willing to do the entire loop, I just don't think she would have fun on her XC bike, and just doesn't have the overall fitness to pedal a 36 pound enduro bike 6000'.

I don't think PCE is worth all the effort for arranging a ride, and not worth $50 each. Just not that "epic" (actually, not epic at all as a shuttle) so we will just pass on riding it together.

Somebody at work or a friend or a family member is chomping at the bit to spend a day in the life of fine living in Palm Springs. Dont give up so easily! All they have to do is drive your car down the mountain and around for shopping. You are driving there and back from home. To you driver, its like being shuttled to and from Palm Springs. Its a win/win scenario.

I have a rule not to associate with co-workers.

I don't know anyone, except my ex girlfriend, who would want to go to Palm Springs. I certainly don't know anyone I would trust to drive my ambulance and don't know anyone who can drive a manual transmission in my Jeep (well, except my ex girlfriend o_O).

I don't really want to socialize with anyone, which is why I was looking to pay for a shuttle.

I'm pretty severely introverted. I can only tolerate being around people in very limited quantities. There is a reason I ride my bike 20 hours a week and virtually zero of it is with others. My mental health tanks fast when I am around others.

Ah man, you're creating your own destitute and solitude. The people are there. Use them!
