Palm Canyon Epic solo?

Has anyone done this solo or without shuttle? I searched and didn’t find anything about not having a shuttle vehicle at the bottom. I’ve never done the ride but would like to before the heat kicks in the desert.

Not that I wouldn’t welcome company but has anyone done it solo? Where did you park? How did you return?

Thanks

Not exactly the PCE, but one of the best rides I've ever done... And no shuttle involved. I can't take credit for the route, though. This one was @mike 's idea. We started at the Denny's parking lot, which made for a great finish!

The climb wasn't bad. There were a few HAB sections on the way to the oasis.

I personally don't recommend going solo....if you are not out there on a busy weekend day, it is pretty isolated...and I know how bad things can go.

There are options to climb from the bottom and do abbreviated routes...but that kinda takes away from the PCE experience.

I don't mind being a tour guide....when were you thinkiing of going?

I agree with J. Don't ride it solo unless it's on a weekend during "PCE season" when you know you will encounter fellow riders. You can get into serious trouble out there alone if an issue arises. It's as remote as remote gets.

A few years back, I parked at the bottom of Art Smith and climbed that to the oasis. I really enjoyed it. To make a loop you could continue on by descending via Art Johnson, Hahn/Buena Vista, or down Dunn Road to something else. I simply did an out-n-back alone on Art Smith.

To start at one of the official Epic starting points would require a massive climb from below sea level (park in Cathedral City) to somewhere around 5K feet on a busy/narrow, twisty mountain highway (Hwy 74). To shorten that climb a bit, you could park at Art Smith TH and climb from there.

I too am interested in going again before it gets too hot and I prefer the private shuttle/small group gig.

Options, there are...

Be good to have company. Soon. Next couple weeks on a weekday preferred. Watching the weather for a cooler day. Would you want to carpool or do we want two vehicles?

Agree with J as well. It's definitely possible to do the ride solo but I wouldn't recommend it for your first time. Not only do you not know the route or where you need to conserve energy, but you'll also spend time and energy navigating rather than just enjoying the ride. It is all on Trailforks but there are still some turns that are easy to miss. And yeah, if anything happens on a weekday you may not see anyone til Friday or Saturday. I'd also recommend doing the PCE proper rather than a loop from the bottom. I always take people down the classic route ending on Wildhorse and Goat Trails their first time out. Some of the other exits are shorter and/or less work but don't do the route justice IMO.
Climbing up from the bottom to Hwy 74 on dirt is an option, I've done it a few times. But its a huge ride (50mi, +7-8,000ft) and you might not enjoy the ride back down as much when you're tired and having to navigate.

If you can't connect with anyone, taking an uber to the top is an option. Pricing used to be comparable to the Crazy Bear shuttle. Even hitchhiking is a possibility. I don't know my upcoming schedule yet but I have some flexibility to ride weekdays and would be down to ride if dates work out. What days work best for you?

Temps are usually good through late March, and flowers get better later in Feb through April. I've done it quite a few times in April and even as late as Memorial Day when there's a weather window.

I don't personally like to shuttle much at all, so I do PCE solo.

I have serious reservations about suggesting anyone do this solo. You certainly can (I do often), but a HUGE chunk of the ride has no cell reception. There is no water. You already missed the cool season. There is no bail out option once you drop into the canyon.

My last ride out there was three weeks ago. I drank all my water and was shocked to find all the streams were dry except the one close to the end. Even then I had to filter some pretty dirty, stagnant water. My mistake, I assumed there would be more with the snow up there.

LOL, when I saw the mention of not shuttling PCE, I almost posted Ben's YouTube of this ride. I was seriously confused watching it, trying to figure out where y'all were, until you pointed out that you were rejoining the normal trail. What's your opinion of someone solo-ing Dunn up to the tractor and riding Hahn down?

Dan , Dunn to Hans is a good loop. You get all the goods if you end at Vons. Done it many times. Phones work there too.

Dunn to the Oasis (tractors) is the hardest part of the climb. But doable.

But I agree with Evan, shuttle it the first time and do PCE proper.
I shuttled with a group last year, but two of us were so torched after the wash, that we bailed at the top of Hahn, rode down Dunn and back to Vons. I'm not sure we made the right choice, but we were having motor skills issues at that point, so we just limped down the hill, (thinking a fire road descent was safer than technical singletrack.) My memory of Dunn is kind of a blur of ruts, honking brakes, and a seemingly endless pavement slog back to the car. I'm not feeling up to the whole PCE right now, but wanted some redemption and part of that fun. Maybe waiting till the next PCE season is the better choice.

I’m also thinking about riding it in a few weeks during the weekday. I have a place out there.

I have done all the routes out there since early 2000. Also solo once all the way up Dunn Rd via Art Smith to Pinion Campground and down PCE on an eBike with extra battery. Many fun options, but be prepared if riding solo. I have seen over the years so many people getting mechanicals or getting hurt.
