Old n Slow in OC

What's up guys, it's wheezy. Been around forever. Used to turn wrenches and sell bikes at the Irvine Bike Source back in the day and also worked for Jim at Adrenaline for a few years a little later in life.

I come and go from the bike scene, but I'm back. Used to race DH, and now that I'm old and fragile I'm learning how to ride UP hills. Wow, it's a lot of work.

In all seriousness stoked to see a community that is thriving.

AAANNNDDDD... I just scored a Santacruz Tallboy CC that I'm pretty stoked on. SUPER SLOW THOUGH DUDES - I'm 6'5" and 270lbs, tryin to drop a few pounds for Dirtbike racing. I race Time keeper enduro races with TWMC. Other than that, live in Turtle Rock Irvine, so I get to ride up Bommer and El Morro as a backyard ride which is cool. If you want to check it out or ride, find me on Strava as "todd mctallguy" I just joined two days ago.

That's all I can think of for now. Have a rad day and see ya on the trail.

Welcome to the land of old(ish) guys who like to ride UP hills. I only represent one of those traits, but I am horribly frightened by both. We are neighbors as I am living in an apartment in Newport Coast while my house is getting remodeled. I am also 6'4" so we've got that going for us. Welcome to the forum with heart and soul mixed with a little bit of Tomfoolery and Shenanigans.

Welcome to the forum.

Herz has to be smacking his head against the wall... Another climber! ;-)

I have hope - he used to race DH. Get a little taste of that again and BOOM, he's off like a rocket. Maybe not as steep and gnarly and consequential as before, but using gravity's pull is better than fighting gravity's pull anyday! Climbing is raw vegetables, descending is meat and potatoes with gravy baby!

I almost spit out my Arrogant Bastard Ale on that one... :-)

Nay, I must respectfully disagree. Climbing is like an exquisite IPA, in that it convinces the body to produce endorphins (not the Knolly version) that deaden the pain and increase endurance. Unless it doesn't. Then one must contemplate Rule #5 and train more. That is all.

...an exquisite IPA,

Another taste I just don't share. Hard to admit that in public, since IPAs are the 1x11 of the beer world. A trendy, acquired taste we are all supposed to like.

I'll stick with Belgian and German beers and non-IPA ales at the risk of great ridicule from the MtB elite.
You can have your hops...

2x10 4 L!

Clearly, I am in the right place. You guys are hilarious.

I still own my an original FOES "Slammer" with a Mr. Dirt Fork. It won many many races. I was literally 100lbs lighter in my prime. I also have a 2012 Uzzi that I take up to Big Bear and recently picked up a 951 EVO that I rode ONCE and then sold as I didn't really see a need for it going as slow as I was on the new "DH Groomers" up there. Kids these days really don't have any idea what DH used to be. At my core, I AM a DH guy, that is learning to climb. VERY SLOWLY. They don't call me wheezy for nothin! And it's crazy how good that tallboy handles descents. It's the rear wheel I have an issue with! LOL. Roached it AGAIN yesterday.

More importantly. IPA over Belgian any day. That said, I have three Westy 12's in my beer fridge right now.

The good ol days on top of the podium!

I probably drink 12 beers per year... Maybe less, and they are usually German. Every now and then, it just tastes good! No hard liquor, though... Not since 1985. That story should go into the "dumb things we did" thread, but I'm afraid my kids will see it someday!

weazy!
Welcome to imtbtrails my friend...
Uhhh, I must admit... I'm a little confused...
We're you born a poor "white" child and then eventually became an older "black" woman???
"NOT THAT THERE IS ANYTHING WRONG WITH IT"
...just sayin' ;)

Actually there is something that has happened on this "Say Hello" that has happened for the first time...
...does anyone happen to know what it is?

Ther are 10 Posts for a new Member before I got a chance to say hello... I could tear up right now...

Welcome my friend! You have definitely come to the right place!

Bike On!

Haahaaaa!!!

Movin on up man. Still a poor white guy, but I love Mrs. Jefferson.

So business related, I need to drop some weight. Gonna have to build a different wheel for my new bike. The stock WTB i19 just isn't going to cut it. I've now just about completely destroyed it in 3 rides. (demo bike until mine gets in)

Thinking I'm gonna build up an i9 on an either a FLOW EX or one of the fancy new Mavic 821 rims. I like the concept of the 821 a lot but haven't heard much feedback. I gotta go hit up Juan at CyclePro and see what the master has to say.

The Flow EX rim is a good choice for us bigger guys. I have mine laced up to a Hope Evo Pro 2 hub. I'm 6' 240 ish geared up to ride. Other than lubing the hub I have not touched them in over a year and they are still perfect.

Oh yeah! Welcome to the forum!

I had a set of Pro 2 / Flow EX wheels on a niner that I had back in like 2007 before I broke my back. Never even had to true them, but I was probably about 35 pounds lighter.

That said, I'd like to find something a little bit lighter that will still hold up. The 821 seems pretty high tech and a step forward in tubeless rim technology when compared to the same rim I was running almost a decade ago. However, the fact that the same rim is still around and still considered a great rim says a lot as well.

Decisions decisions...

The Flow has been around for awhile. The EX version is relatively new. I believe it's a little wider and has a lower profile and is lighter than the original Flow.

Just to toss an option in ther in regards to rims. I went with the WTB i25 and I am so stoked that I did. The guy that built them up for me said that he always injoy building them because they are like, "Made for building>" The way they are machined and the "I" Beam for torsion and strength.

I like to bomb the "G" Outs. At 205 pounds they are not flexing at all...

To say the least, very happy!

Hey, Wheezy. It's good to see another elder rider here. Seriously, it's pretty awesome. If you're the slowest rider, people point and say, "Look at that old guy out here riding. I hope I can do that when I'm his age, bless his heart." And if you're a faster rider, you get to laugh as you blast by the whipper snappers half your age. They can't say anything, because they're gasping for breath. For us, there IS no downside.
8-)

Haahaaa! That's a rad way to look at it. Gotta let the gray beard grow out so they know. (I don't think I've EVER passed anybody uphill though) - I have been passed plenty of times and then caught em on the way down though!

You really can't get much lighter than a Stans Flow EX (they do not use eyelets). However, follow Mikie's advice - the 25s sound rad and strong.

There are several "i25" rims. Which one you running Mikie?

I'm assuming the "frequency team" - they definitely look good.

This wheel builder site is a time killer, but sure is fun to spec stuff out and compare. http://www.prowheelbuilder.com/cw/?step ... Yes Sir, errrrr I mean Ma'am? It is indeed the Frequency series. I am beating the hell out of those rims and they are as true as the day I got them...
My Builder was Chris of Built to Last Wheels. I wrote and did an interview with him here: http://imtbtrails.com/magazine/?p=843

Welcome. I'm, or I should say I was an enduro racer myself. Raced quite a few Ghostriders as well as a couple of your club races. Hung up the race plate a few years ago and just ride for fun every now and then. Think my only first place came at a ghost rider.

DUDE, that is AWESOME. Anybody that's done a TWMC enduro is a brother for life. I've NEVER won an event! But we're not allowed to ride the GR. Anybody that does our "club" events on a regular basis will do very well at GR compared to the "masses", but a win is tough no matter what. WELL DONE!!!

So dudes, I'm getting the hang of this "trail bike" thing. I'm doing pretty good on the 200lb and over categories on Strava (probably even better if there was a 250 and over category. Heck I was 200 as a junior in high school). I am 1 second off from having 1st overall on a few dh segments, which is rad and super frustrating at the same time. Considering walking the uzzi up this week, as I'm pretty sure I could drop a few more seconds off a few spots.

Having a blast!!!!

As the STRAVA slowly, but surely, begins to take over his soul, he then shall become another STAVAZZHOLE as did other fine folk of innocents of yesteryear...
I guess that's just the Facts of Life...We still love you Mrs. Jefferson!

LMAO, STRAVAZZHOLES - it's already too late Mike! I'm hooked.

I even got a fancy Garmin edge!

Seriously though, I'm loving riding like I haven't in many years. I did my "usual" ride with a friend that is way more fit than me (on anything but a bicycle apparently). He was out of gas near the end of the ride, which is a very gentle, but kind of sneakily long climb. Not gonna lie, felt good to kick his ass. However, now he's gunning for me and it won't take him long to get his bike legs back.

This is awesome!
So glad you got the bug!
The second time around was way better for me too!
Bike on my Brothah!!
