New to LA – looking to join some group rides

Hi all, I’ve recently moved to Venice from London UK and can’t wait to hit the amazing Socal trails I’ve heard about and seen videos of. I’m relatively new to mountain biking having switched over from years of road riding, and loving it so far.


I’ve searched long and hard online for local clubs / groups that regularly ride together but am having very little luck. How do you guys go about getting together for regular rides? I much prefer riding with others than solo if I can.


I actually have a completely clear weekend this weekend and really hoping to hit up the Santa Monica Mountains (or anywhere else within a reasonable drive) on Saturday and Sunday. Are there any rides planned anywhere that I could join? Also advice generally for getting into the sport out here would be really appreciated!

Welcome! Check out the Trailhead section and maybe hit-up your countryman @Andy if you want a tour of the OC stuff. I'm out of town this weekend but ride the JPl trails most weekends and would be happy to meet-up.
 
Welcome @TomF from way down here in Laguna Beach. Glad to hear you are switching from road to mt. bike. No lack of British mtb talent, that's for sure.

This is a great little forum of friendly but addicted riders. There are no regular group rides per se, but there's always something on the agenda and it's easy to link up with a rider or two (or 15 for this weekend's Cannel Plunge).

Get out and ride - mt. bikes are fun!

Welcome to imtbtrails friend!
This is by far the friendliest site in all of So Cal, I really think you found the right place.
Guys are always posting up rides in the Trailheads Forum. In the light blue navigation bar above there is a link to the calendar that links to Trailheads.
There are all levels of rides, and you have a great selection of trails to choose from in So Cal.

Whats up Tom. I'm in LA also, and looking for riding partners too. Its no fun getting lost in the desert alone.
I'm going to head up Sullivan Canyon>Dirt Mulholland>Topanga Creek Outpost Loop and back tomorrow morning Friday 8/19 traffic willing I should be rolling between 9-10am.

Hello and welcome from South Orange County... We're glad you found us. :thumbsup:

I recommend taking a look at the Trailhead sub-forum to see the kind of rides that are posted, as well as the "I rode my bike today thread..." in the Ride Reports forum. That is a long thread that Herzalot started to give us a place to post up our everyday rides that are too small or quick to warrant a full blown ride report. A quick tour through there will give you some hints about the local trails. Bigger ride reports are in the main part of that forum. Dig around...

Feel free to jump in anywhere. We like new guys!

Ryan, I've only been up Westridge to Dirt Mulholland. But I love that area! Effin' steep getting up that hill though! Have fun tomorrow!
@TomF That would be a great ride to do if you could pull it off!
 
Wow - thanks so much for the warm welcome guys, not to mention all the great advice! I will certainly keep an eye on the trailheads forum - hopefully there will be some more rides posted in time for the weekend.

MrGreedom - thanks for the offer but I'm busy Friday unfortunately, so really looking for something on Saturday. Sunday I'm thinking of joining this https://www.meetup.com/Santa-Monica-WLA-Mountain-Biking-Group/events/233456616/ - whoever is up for it should come!

Any other advice or ride offers people have would be appreciated - bottom line is I'm keen to ride as much as possible, so hope to join you soon.

There are a few guys on here who ride in that area frequently. If you search the forum, you'll find some pretty good descriptions and pictures...

I'm a big fan of the Google Earth flyover, and use it whenever I ride something for the first time. Find a route on Strava or Garmin, and check out the features beforehand... It lets me easily see the type of terrain "up close", as well as the elevation changes.
 
Welcome from "the OC"; we've encountered the group from LA at Point Magu State Park; seem really nice. Look up "let's go outside" for a plethora of rides and hikes in the Irvine area. Many of the events are on land that is usually closed to the public.
