I did the 6 hour race at Sara park a few years ago and loved it. I have been back to do a few variations of the race route. Fun desert riding with some Great Lake views.

The stone age delayed my day, so I didn't make it to the Special Activities and Recreation Area. No matter: Amboy Crater is on the way home. That's the trick, by the way, for experiencing variety. You know, not eating the same mashed potatoes and gravy every day. Did I mention my days are numbered?

I took the National Trails Highway through the Mojave, which is a much gentler trip than it was 100 years ago...until I reach Amboy Crater. Solo night ride to up and down the west face. While in the cone, I kept thinking about the way out, and a quick safety break psyched me out. Suddenly feeling all alone and cold and kinda being watched, I scurried off on my bike and rode down the west face for the first time in 6 years. I wanted to get it over with. This time I didn't have to bail and toss my bike onto cheese grater basalt. So the frame is intact, and we're even.

It was three of my most satisfying miles ever.
