Let's talk bottoms.... (brackets you scoundrels)

Would you buy a bike with a press fit bottom bracket?

I have owned three PF BB type frames (two Treks, one Pivot) and I have never had an issue with what would be considered a premature wearing out of the bearings compared to a threaded BB. That said, I do prefer threaded but obviously, some of the frames I like do not come that way,

Have both and obviously prefer threaded. That being said I've always gotten more than acceptable life from my press fits and I think you only hear the horror stories. Three of the bikes in the garage have BB92 press fits. One went over 5k miles before being changed to accommodate an eagle drivetrain. The other 2 both have well over 2K on them. Twice I've changed em cause I was chasing creaking issues that turned out not to be the BB. They aren't that much money and take less than 15 minutes to change. Maybe I'm just lucky or not big enough to kill em quick.

My Tracer is PF. Never a problem. 3 years. Replaced it once (the BB, not the Tracer). Maybe mine has been OK because I don't ride as often as you hooligans, nor does it ever really see water.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy another bike with a PFBB if it checked all of the other boxes. Threaded BB is not one of the boxes, but is still preferred.

I don't think we have to worry. Looks like most of us will be buying Guerrilla Gravity as our next bike anyway. ;)

I'm slowly moving everything over to King threaded bottom brackets... if it's good enough for @mtnbikej , it's good enough for me! In practice it's a non-issue, but I like having as much interchangeability as possible on my bikes. Being able to swap cranks out is a bonus, and I like keeping everything with a single standard. Really hard to do in the bike world!!!

I crossed all the bikes with PF off the list... Canyon, YT, Intense... Because my mechanic said Something along the lines of NFW! :D

I only get 6 months out of a threaded Shimano on the single speed. And I climb the Hightower like a SS, so I don't have high hopes for the RaceFace that's in there now. My last RaceFace only went 3 months... I'm not taking a chance that I'll be one of the press fit horror stories.

I think my next BB will be a Hope... :inlove:

My Czar BB was making noise a couple months after a new B.B., so I had it in for inspection. After he pressed in a new replacement I asked if he used cement. He said he only used cement on problem cases. I said a two-month old B.B. creaking in a new frame sounds like a problem case. As we were talking he noticed a little imperfection in one bearing, so he pulled it out for warranty, and put in a new one with cement. (Though he would have removed it anyway.)

It was fine after that, but would have been nice to be able to sleuth it myself, which I would have if it was threaded.

My other bike with a PF92 (alloy frame) never had any issues.

We have no PF BBs in the House now, prefer to keep it that way.

I don’t even know what you’re talking about :gotnothing:
The bottom bracket is the area of the bike between the cranks. An axle goes through there and turns on bearings. They are known to creak and make noise. In the past, the parts were screwed onto the BB shell (threaded). Recently, with the advent of carbon frames, BBs are often pressed in rather than threaded on, relying on the crank axle tension to keep them tight.

Got it?

Thanks teacher :) I know what the B.B. is I just didn’t know about the thread or press options...never even gave it a thought :whistling:

Now I’M falling asleep...

LOL Luis...

May your ears be filled not with the sound of a noisy BB, whether it be threaded or not. To the mating crunch of rubber and dirt...

You don't have to go anywhere
You don't have to see anyone
All you gotta do in this world
Is ride
All you gotta do is ride

It's the end of a long, hard decade
And before the next long, hard decade
By the end of which a billion creatures yet unborn
Will die
All you gotta do is ride

Love me love me love me love me love me
That's what all the papers say (But they used to be trees)
Hold me hold me hold me hold me hold me
Please don't let me get away
But if you don't love yourself
What's the use in someone else
Loving you?

You don't have to sharpen yourself
You're embedded deep as it is
All you've gotta do in this world
Is ride
All you gotta do is ride

You don't have to worship the chair
You don't have to sleep with a judge
All you've gotta do in this world
Is ride
All you gotta do is ride

Love me love me love me love me love me
That's what everybody say (Everybody but me)
Hold me hold me hold me hold me hold me
Please don't let me get away
But if you don't love yourself
What's the use of someone else
Loving you?
But if you don't love yourself
What's the use of someone else
Loving you?

So put down your hands
Pick up your head
And ride

Sittin' in a carriage in the pouring rain
In Swindon
With an anorak
Better ride on home
Better ride on home
Better ride on home
Better ride on home

Chris to the rescue!

Still on the original PF on my Cannondale F-Si with the SiSl crank. No problems. My Cannondale SuperSix is also PF, I assume the original (I know the first owner) with Dura Ace.

Do I prefer threaded? Yes I do. But not earth shattering. It is nice that my Enduro and Epic are both threaded. The Epic recently got a RacefaRa crank and spindle, so being threaded is handy, until I didn't tighten it enough and it unthreaded on a ride.

Guys, is the BB shell on a V1 (non boost) Bronson more narrow than the subsequent boost frames? TIA for enabling my laziness!
