Kauai Trails

Heading to Kauai, and decided I'll have time to ride. The most promising trail I've found so far seems to be the one from Wailua. I plan to stop by Kauai Cycle, grab a Franko's map of the island, talk to the peeps there (and perhaps rent a bike if I can't borrow one from the Ohana over there), but wondering if anyone here has any experience or "must do" trail recommendations. Powerline trail looked promising, until I saw it's almost always muddy as hell and super overgrown (one person rated it "worst ride ever" on MTBR....LOL).

Oh....you know the protocol for this one... Ton-O-Pics and Ride Report Vebiage!
It's a moral imperative!!!

Give them a call ahead of time...I've always found the Kauai peeps to be really friendly...the downside with riding on Kauai is you will almost always have mud with the amount of rain that falls on the east and north side. If the weather has been relatively dry in the past week or so, powerline may be rideable.

The shop may also know of some of the "unofficial/might be trespassing" trails that are abandoned sugar-cane access roads that used to be all over the southern half of the island.

Here's also a resource for official trails: <a class="postlink" href="http://hawaiitrails.ehawaii.gov/island.php?island=Kauai" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://hawaiitrails.ehawaii.gov/island.php?island=Kauai</a>

Contact dirtmistress and get Fockin Johnny's number. But I think he might be living on the Big Island though.

Have fun my sweet dirt sista!!

I had an extended stay in Kauai and did not want not to ride for 6 weeks (considering the drinks and dining I was looking forward to). I bought a hardshell case and flew my Uzzi with me. Kinda of a hassle and in then found out there is not much riding there. Very thick rain forest , roots and mud. I did get some miles on red dirt roads that are on the beach. Overall it was not a good idea for me to take the bike. My best suggestion is rent a jeep...tour the island and lots of little offroad adventures. Renting a Harley for a day is blast too.

Yeah, I don't think there's a whole lot there. I rented a bike from a shop in Wailua about four years ago. They directed me to a place to ride, but it was all dirt road and fairly muddy. The only interesting thing about the ride was the fact that it went to a spot where they filmed part of Jurassic Park, and the posts from the gate are still there. Honestly, nothing exciting.
