Just moved to LA

Davide

Newbie with Hope!
Hi All
I moved from Boston a month ago, and I am looking for rides suggestions (single track moderate/advanced).
I am also interested in joining organized rides around the area if there are any!

I've heard mountain biking here is fantastic, and I really looking forward to enjoying some of the Southern California trails!

Thanks in advance,
Davide

Yup!
Welcome @Davide !
You have come to the right place. Friendliest mountain bike forum on the planet.
So Cal has awesome Singletrack!
Where abouts in LA do you live? There are guys from all over that are here on imtbtrails.
I hope we hit some trails together soon. Gotta check out that Boston accent!

Lots to see, lots to ride! As a fellow former east coaster, it's pretty amazing out here... we have everything from crowded county parks to secluded and remote mountain rides... let us know where you are, and how far you want to drive, and someone will offer a suggestion.

I'm down in Orange County, but venture out to other parts of the world for good rides...

Thank you for all the replies -- I am in Culver City, but I can drive 1-2 hours if needed!

@mikie: while I spent 6 awesome years in Boston, I am Italian so no accent (at least not Boston accent :))
Dahmeet! Well... Okay. I'll still ride with you. :-)
Anybody willing to drive like that is in my book of mountain bikers!

Welcome @Davide! If you want a sampling of SoCal riding, there's always Laguna Beach and surrounding area. Not in your new 'hood, but certainly something to check out. In winter, it seems to be the world's playground for off-season pros doing corporate photo shoots and videos for their sponsors. Hit up @StrandLeper , @Cougar , @sir crashalot @littlewave or a host of others, myself included, if you want to come down this way for a ride.

As @Mikie said, IMTB Trails is the best little mt bike forum in the region. Friendly folks who LOVE riding mt. bikes and are amazingly tolerant of diverse riding styles and opinions - especially if they match my own! :sneaky:

Ride often and post often.

Hey @Davide welcome.
*Off topic* I see you are from Boston. You might be interested that the Dodgers are playing the Red Sox in LA Friday Aug 5th. The SoCal Alzheimer's Association (I'm on the board) is doing a fundraiser/awareness night where we "turn the stands purple". For $27 you get a ticket to the game in our section and an #endalz tshirt. If you, or anyone else, are interested in supporting Alzheimer's Association or seeing the Dodgers vs Red Sox let me know and I'll get the ticket form to you.

Oh yea! Welcome!
Most definitely ride the Santa Monicas since they are practically in your backyard. Nothing too technical there but a lot of fun XC style trails.
Head on over to the San Gabriels for the challenging chunky exposed OMG what the hell im gonna die maybe kinda riding (I exaggerate a little)

Welcome @Davide

Lots of riding in the Santa Monica's. Lots to explore out there.

I'm in the OC....but I tend to get around.

I post up rides on a regular basis, but usually only get 1 or 2 takers.

All we ask is that you participate....lurkers are no fun.

Nope. I did Middle Merrill. Not an exaggeration... :p But I'm also ready to go back and do it again!

Welcome @Davide ! Check out Sullivan Canyon as already recommended. It's a fire road climb with a single track descent that weaves back and forth across a double track trail that goes down the middle of the canyon. If you're looking for more technical terrain, there are a few off the menu trails to be found. I would offer to show you around, but I won't be riding in the area until the middle of August. Enjoy!

el prieto. A great fun single track especially in the summer b/c of the cover. . from the parking lot at JPL.. lots of stuff to ride but try to end w/ el prieto...

@konakc I went to El Prieto - I loved it, but the climb is pretty long in my opinion (ok, I need to train more :)). Any advice on a trail/loop with more modest climbs?

Which way did you climb to El Prieto? I imagine riding an up and back might be strenuous, but the Fern Truck Trail and/or the Chaney Trail to Brown Mountain are some of the mellowest and shorest climbs in the San Gabriel Mountains. Consider the Fullerton Loop, Bonelli Regional Park, Monroe Truck Trail, and Chino Hills State Park for more modest riding. Throw out a few dates and times, and we are happy to show you various rides.

Im sure there are more experts on this site but most of the climbs in San Gabs are well shss all the climbs are hard.. .. Going up to brown mountain is probably the easiest, then coming down el prieto... santa monicas a little more mellow, cross country, ie backbone...
OC has great trails... Santiago Oaks, Aliso Canyon, Whiting Ranch/ Luge and El Moro/Laguna Coast clusters are probably the most popular...

Plus it is So Cal.....You pay to play. Usually steep ups for the downs.

Welcome to So Cal @Davide !!!!!
Stay off the freeways and on the trails, and you'll be fine! As others have said there are plenty of trails out here. From cruising fire roads to straight gnar downhill bombs!!!

Post up a pic of your steed, we'll judge you from that and throw out suggestions strictly based on your ride. Jk;)
