It's That Time Again... 2022

2022 kinda went like this......

Other than to ride as much as I can, I never really have any goals as far as numbers go. That being said, if I see a certain number is within reach, I will go for it. This year it was 4k miles and 400k feet of climbing. I didn't realize how close I was to the mileage but, oh well. I'd rather ride my MTB then shoot for a mileage goal on the gravel bike.

You still have time !
Only 36 miles.

My main goal is for 1000 hours a year, and I got it again. I might give up that goal this year, mainly because I don't think I need to goal to stay motivated to ride anymore.

I don't have a mileage goal. My mileage is technically lower this year because I rode my MTB more than in years past, and that is fine by me.

My racing goals fell through, but I'm okay with it. I lost all motivation to race after a bad event (the event was bad, my performance was acceptable even if not praiseworthy) and it worked out because I still had a lot of fun riding this year.

My current goal for 2023 is to just enjoy the ride. Being spontaneous with my riding has worked out well, and I'm going to try and do more random things with little planning.

That's what I thought at first then realized some of those were walking miles. Duh. Anyways, went out for a quick spin with the break in the rain and added another 25. Ended up with 3,949 actual cycling miles.

I may or may not start the new year with a fondo. I'd like to have some legs left for an MTB ride on Monday.

My numbers were paltry, but the Strava machine indicates that I did those miles and feet more rapidly. Inconsistent riding seemed to manifest itself in a greater disparity in performance from good days to bad days, but overall I felt like I stepped up to, and got somewhat comfortable with more imposing terrain. Suicide (the trail) was a continuation project from last year that I continued to dial in, and made for some of my most rewarding rides. I don’t anticipate my numbers changing radically for next year, so if there’s a goal for it’s to make more time to ride with other IMTBTers.

Lotsa cool rides in 2022 (Gooseberry Mesa, yeah!), Lotsa cool people to ride with (Tom The Bomb, the SJT crew). 2023, please give me more of the same!

Cool rides in new locations trump any numbers. My goal is always 2000 miles and 200K feet. Since I don’t pay for STRAVA, I don’t know my actual numbers but I was able to ride new stuff in Whistler, Squamish and several US states so I’m good with that.
Hitting new stuff in Montana and Interior BC this year so I’m already pretty excited about that.

It's been a good year, but I didn't ride as many places as I'd like ( I'll leave it at that ) or as much as last year. Or so I think, don't pay for STRAVA or use it every ride.
Plan in the new year? Ride more, and to start riding some of the places I travel to for work. A decent 2022, and looking for a great 2023!

Started 2022 with back surgery. Got back on skis Feb. 26. I had a nice balance of ski, surf and Mtb this year considering the two month stall at the beginning. Only new dirt was some minor rides with my brother in Tahoe. I’m just glad I finished 2022 without any more trips to the ER!

I don’t set recreational goals. I just hope to be able to do something active every weekend and most days off. I’m on borrowed time with my back, so I will take what I can get!

Wishing you all a healthy 2023!

At least a bit more active than last year, 101 days (25 over), over 152K elevation, just under 1.5K miles. Sure seemed like a slower year, maybe cuz of more FUN rides with new trails and buds, that was my goal anyway - less serious, no competitions. Vail Enduro might come back this year tho, and back to Sea Otter for sure!

Happy New Year!!

Numbers were decent, but I went into the year with no concrete goal in mind other than to ride the bike... True Grit in the spring with @mtnbikej was a wake up call to my lack of fitness. His injury shortly thereafter was another wake up call that things can change quickly in this sport. So... plans formed and Frog Hollow came into the picture- before I get any older, or something else gets in the way. @redwoods and @SnakeCharmer were there for a lot of the training rides, which we just call "rides" in the Gabes. Every ride gets you in shape up here... Frog Hollow itself was the single most challenging thing I've done on a bike. Hopefully donuts don't get in the way, and I'll be able to take another crack at it this year.

As others have said, the group rides this year were the best. Getting @mtnbikej back up to Wrightwood early in his recovery was a good one. Night rides with @DangerDirtyD were always epic, even if we never made it to Sunset. Lots of big loops with @SnakeCharmer and @redwoods. Idlehour with a couple different crews... Condor Peak, before they widened the Cliffs section. Suicide and Dead Cow with @buggravy... Need to do a few more of those this year, and I believe Snake Man may be scouting another destination that looks next level. :whistling:

The large group ride at San Juan deserves its own little paragraph... When it started coming together, I thought it was just going to be a fun ride to welcome @Mikie back to the area. I don't think I'm alone, though, when I say that it relit the spark and showed me how much camaraderie there is in this group. I'd really like to see a few more of those rides in 2023.

Hopefully we all stay healthy, or regain some health, and continue to enjoy this sport in 2023.

Odd, looking at my numbers they don't mean much to me. I mean, I can look at others' numbers and see what's possible, which is inspiring! I've had years with more elev., but those were heavily padded by bike park chair lifts. 2020 had way more activities, but ironically lockdowns allowed that. I've had years with way lower numbers, but I was either injured or on a Strava diet for a while. I do have goals, but they mostly relate to completing a few particular routes, and so pertain to my fitness. I suppose building fitness should in theory translate into greater totals, but looking back at previous years where I've been able to complete big rides, the totals don't necessarily show that.

As others have said quite eloquently, the most meaningful aspects to me have been the experiences with great people in great places. While my personal goals (fitness) are important to me, they're what directly allow me to share these experiences with others, and in that regard they're a means to an end. [After typing that, I don't think it makes sense, but I'll leave it for now.]

Here's to an epic 2023, filled with many shared experiences, struggles and triumphs alike!

I do not have the Strava deluxe version . I did get back at it this year. Dealt with a couple injury issues that were quite frustrating. Got through that. Did some really cool rides with family and friends in Washington and Moab. So fun to look back at the picks. Was a long time coming with Imtb hooligans at San Juan. Met some very nice people this year. I have a nice rider list to call on. Looking forward to riding more with old friends and the new ones. Health , wealth, happiness and miles of endless epicness to all of you this year.
Just ride it baby!
