I am going to be in LA 12/15-19. Would love to catch a night ride on 12/17 and or 12/18. I have never canyon rode and a friend that used to live there raves about it. I ride about 40-50 miles per week here in NC in the Mountains (Pisgah, DuPont, Bent Creek, etc.) and single track here in Charlotte. Is anyone available to show me around either of those nights? I ride a 27.5" Cannondale Trigger Carbon 2 FS and would like to rent/borrow something similar while out there. IF I can lock down a ride or two for sure out there I will ship my bike out. Let me know if you can give me a tour. I would really appreciate it.

Thanks,

Justin

Hey Welcome Justin!
I'm sure there are those here that may know what you mean by "Canyon" ride. I unfortunately do not. Could you share a little more so I could be up to speed?
Where specifically in L.A.?

Thanks for hitting us up brothah...

Hey Mike,

Thanks for getting back to me. Sorry about the terminology. I guess what I meant was that I checked on some local loops and Fullerton (Fully) Loop kept coming up but it sounds a bit more urban and flat. I am looking for more true California riding. I am going to be in the Cerritos area and was looking to pick up a ride Wednesday 12/17 and Thursday 12/18 but I am not available until after 5pm. My friend that used to live there suggested Turnbull? Is that more mountain/canyon type riding?

Thanks

Justin

Turnbull and Santiago Oaks both better options but not legal night rides. What size bike do you ride and what pedals do you use?

Santiago Oaks a great place with lots of trails again not legal after dark.

I dont night ride but I believe you can ride Santiago Truck Trail and the Luge - both super fun

It might be a little out of your way, but The Path Bike Shop Live Oak store rents bikes and is right near numerous classic outings up to and around the county high point, Santiago Peak in the Santa Ana mountains in Cleveland National Forest.

Bag the peak and hit classic ST on the way down. Joplin is a classic drainage ride (before it was a seat post). Spectacular ridge rides like Skinsuit, Bell Ridge, Los Piños Ridge. San Juan, Holy Jim, Trabuco, all great. Mountain bike riding in the classic sense; big climb, long downhill. The trails have varied difficulty, moderate to hard. Happy to docent in this area.

Another mega classic is Palm Canyon Epic near Palm Springs. Worth the drive, and other great trails like Ramona are in the area.

Check mountainbikebill.com, he has a great best-of list with great descriptions and nav aids.

PS: Not into a night mission. Have fun wherever.

Speaking of Palm Canyon,
There is suppose to be a shuttled event this Saturday. Tom the Bomb is driving this one home with Crazy Bear Bikes if you are looking for weekend options.

Guys, are we allowed to ride the Gabes in-week at night? Chantry Flats/Gabrielino and the sister trails are awesome epics. Just don't know if it's legal...

Are you limited to Wednesday/Thursday? Can you stick it out until the weekend? We can take on a whole bunch more than the nickel tour if you got the weekend!

As you can tell, we want to take care of you bud! :D

You're ok to ride, but the gate on the road to Chantry is closed not long after sundown. If you leave your car at the top of the road, you'll be stuck until morning.

Thanks for all of the great information everyone. Unfortunately I only have Wed. and Thurs. nights to ride. I am going to get in contact with the Path today. If I am going to ride Turnbull, is there a shop between there an Cerritos to get a bike OR does someone have something similar to my Cannondale Trigger Carbon 2 27.5" that I could borrow/rent from you?

Thanks,

Justin

i know its a bit of a drive but if you are going to ride at night and you have the time and all - just ride the santa ana's/ Hop on the 22 freeway - the path is close - ride out to old camp then finish with the luge. Something like that is a great ride. OR bag the peak at night - cool adventure

Half-a-Fork,
Do you have a Garmin?
One of these guys could get you a .gpx file to upload so that even at night you could follow the route, and know how to get to the trailhead...
I imagine you could upload it to the STRAVA app on a smart phone, I just don't know how that works...

That way you are not worrying about directions and enjoy the ride a whole lot more.
Just a thought.

I do use Strava, but don't want to ride alone. I have someone that is going to ride with me. Now just looking for the best spot between Cerritos and Turnbull to rent a bike. Preferably a 27.5" L Full Suspension.

Thanks,

Justin

You can call Buena Park Bicycles ahead of time and set up a 27.5 Giant Trance. Ask for Ricardo, Andre, or Steven tell them Warren sent you there way. http://www.fullertonbicycle.com/

Drifter... are you the Warren who rides in BP kit? Just curious... trying to put together real names with secret aliases can be a challenge. We might have met once on the trail.

Hint for Mikie: Some forums have the capability of displaying real names in a user's profile. It's sometimes helpful. For instance, if I'm going for a ride with RadRider83 and can't remember if his name is Jerry... or James... or Jedediah, it could save some potential embarrassment. Most of the users here are honest enough not to use that knowledge to steal that persons identity, children, or naughty selfies on the iCloud... I think.

Not to hijack this post, Yes, I have the capability to have the names show under the username below the avatar. However, I am finding that a lot of people are not even adding their names to their profile. I have thought of making it a requirement so I can get in contact with folks if need be...

As well, Yes, Driffter33 is Warren of Buena Park Bikes :D

Nah, that's not what I was talking about.

THAT'S what I was talking about. I see that it IS enabled on user profiles. I was confused and thought it was not. Never mind.

Epic at night San Juan none like it. 11. something miles of down. With the past rains there will be much ruts on any trail except for anything coming off Wilson.
