Hey Fam,
Got a buddy at work who wants to get a Mountain Bike (he is not a mechanic). He has $600 bucks. Looking for something he can ride around the neighborhood and 'occasionally' take out in the dirt. Family just had their first baby (yay!) and he is desperate for a little exercise.

@Redman ! Ironically, he works out of Las Vegas now! :)

Anyway...
If you had $600 bucks and wanted a 'Entry level' bike, what is the most bang for the buck?
I found this at REI:
Gives him some cash to get some gloves and a helmet...

I bet that weighs as much as two of our bikes... :gag:

But if he's only going to pedal around the neighborhood...

Bought my wife a co-op bike at REI about a year ago. A crossover if you want to put a name on it. For road, on sale for $450.00.
I must say I'm impressed with what we got for the money. Of course not high end, but light, functional, mechanical disc brakes, and I would not mind riding it around if it fit me. A excellent value, and nothing needed to be replaced or repaired.

Honestly, i wouldn’t spend $600 on a new bike.....you just don’t really get a trail worthy bike at that price.

find a few year old bike.
Personally I think I would take the word 'dirt' out of the equation for the most part. I did some searches via google and this one kept popping up.

Comes in at about 32 pounds. I have lifted some of imtbtrails bikes on and off vehicles and know they can compete with that! :gag:

So... If dirt isn't really in the equation, why not steer him towards a hybrid bike? That isn't really a fork on the REI, so why carry it around when it's going to be on pavement anyway?

Something like this, maybe? $580...

Good point. My main thought was i don't ee Tad becoming a mountain biker and he may hit some trails as a wild thought, or as a once in a while adventure. That's a pretty bike for the price.

Looked at the REI DRT 1.1 above for my friend's son too, but at the time it was available in "S" (or "VS, can't remember) only. Not good for a guy 6'4". Otherwise a great choice IMO.

The new spec rockhoppers look decent. This one is spot on his price point.

Should serve as a great all purpose rideNride. the most trail worthy spec, but if he likes the taste of dirt, it's got modern xc geo and even routing for a dropper.

Alternatively, could put some slicks on there and have a day to day bike.
Derek, That is indeed a good call... Thanks for this.
Everything is out of stock however. lol! I think everyone is.
