I have two words for Microsoft

No need to mention them; you already know what they are.

BTW, before any of you Mac users jump through the flaming hoops to try to obtain your old product key (necessary to re-enter after any number of minor changes to your Mac, like a sys update), go here

<a class="postlink" href="http://workonmac.pedroponte.com/mac/serial-key-mac-office-2011" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://workonmac.pedroponte.com/mac/ser ... ffice-2011</a>

and use the "New updated method" of downloading the plist file and placing it as instructed. Bingo.

I don't have a product key. No box, no confirmation email from Microsoft, which are the only places your product key will be. Spent way too much time and was finally passed off to the retailer I bought it from, who obviously is not available for casual chitchat in the evening. Hence, the workaround. If even one person could be spared my frustration, my heart would sing. This song:

<a class="postlink" href="https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=fyBkQokqlN8" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=fyBkQokqlN8</a>

To Microsoft. Have a pleasant day.

I'm not sure what the issue is that your talking about, but I feel your pain. :o
I never upgrade any operating system.

What I learned years ago is it will suck up hours and hours of my time, I'll get pissed  , frustrated :x etc, and it will never work right.
Just ain't worth it.
Last time I upgraded a O/S I lost over 300 CD's of music on iTunes never to be recovered. Lots of pics etc.
Yes I Backed up to a external hard drive, only to find out after the fact that it wasn't a back-up but some crap that mirrored the original PC, so it was a brick too.

Oh well. Use it until it's useless and buy a new one. Lesson learned. Hence, my macbook pro is still snow leopard  , my work computer XP :D  , and my iphone ios7 (bad upgrade, didn't follow ) and MotoX Android :D :D . the android works best of all of them.
My two words for electronics "planned obsolescence".

Hence, I now have a surface pro 3. my opinion...Meh.... :| ( but posting this on the macbook..)

I come from the use Mircosoft for about a year. Back everything up then do a new clean install...hopefully with a newer version. Mircosoft just starts to bog down in time.

Ah, thanks for the commiseration.

Despite my bitching, I believe Macs are amazingly trouble-free overall, assuming you're not an early adopter. I've been using one since '87 for work, so I appreciate the advances. I wouldn't touch anything Microsoft if I didn't have to. Whenever I do I feel like I'm going back in time.

I was a Microsoft supporter for years. I was the GOD. Macs were childrens' toys.

It was about eight years ago that I had some kind of HD anomaly on my Windows computer. I fixed the problem, but getting Microsoft to authorize the operating system was a @#$% nightmare. I got it all done, then had to jump through the same @#$% hoops to get other Microsoft software to become "authorized" to run on the computer. Then I learned that the real cause of the problem was an adapter, so I replaced it. Then all the previously authorized software was no longer authorized, and the nightmare began all over again. I was less than pleased.

In a rage, stomped downstairs to find my wife, and said, "Take me to the Apple Store. I need to go NOW. " She was floored that I would even want to set foot in an Apple Store. She had been a user since the early 80's, despite my ridicule. She would get a new computer about every seven years, not because the old one was bad, but because nobody wants to drive the autobahn in a Model T. There was no doubt that Apple made reliable hardware and software.

On the way to the store, she asked, "Why?" In my enraged state, all I could communicate was something like, "I've @#$%ing had it with those #$%ing @#$s at Microsoft. I don't care WHAT it costs, I'll never using one of their @$%ing products in my @#$%ing life." And I haven't.

I know this doesn't help you, but when I read of your problem, all that previous fury came bubbling to the top.

Rob

P.S.
I was bold enough to beta test Yosemite. Early versions had a few minor bugs, but the overall experience was smoother than buying a public release of anything from Microsoft.

Hey, Rob, that actually does help me. 8-)

Macs are just easy, and they get better continually. I just set the wife up with a MB Air. It would have been idiot easy if she had remembered her password

Back in the mid to late 1990s I was running Windows 98 when I had a bad crash... Microsoft's "tech support" said there was absolutely no way to save the data, and the only option was to reformat the hard drive, lose everything, and start over.

I taught myself how to use a live Linux CD, and saved all of my data without ever booting Windows... I ran Linux for years, and only switched to a Mac when OS X came out, because of the unix underpinnings. I've been Windows free at home since that Windows 98 experience. I guess I can really hold a grudge.

I could really date myself... My first computer was a Franklin Ace 2200, which was an Apple IIe clone with a green monitor, dual 5 inch drives, running Apple Pro DOS.

I was going to create a new "I HATE MICROSOFT" thread... but since there is already one, I thought I might pile on.

The pretentiousness of this company knows no bounds. Apparently, even after paying money to "buy" their product, Microsoft feels they still own the software on your computer, and can do anything they want with it, at will.

Tonight I came home from dinner to find a big f$%#^$ pop up on my screen stating "Microsoft Windows is a SERVICE. As part of this service, routine upgrades and updates need to be performed on your computer. Routine maintenance has been scheduled today for 5:45 PM." Fortunately I was able to click on the "reschedule at another time" button.

I am seriously considering building another LINUX box to monitor the traffic on my network. I use an unswitched router with a packet sniffer so that I can invisibly scan all network traffic without anyone being able to know I am there. It's not illegal if it's MY network :) I used to do this back in the day to hack online games. Even though I have ALL privacy settings turned on, I will guarantee you that Windows is sending private data back to Microsoft. It is the one company on the planet I trust the LEAST.

So, they haven't changed since I dumped them in the 90s?

Software is planned obsolescence. What else would cost 1000.00 and not work right after 2-3 years? Apple's phones are the very worst offenders, and my surface pro 3 hasn't seen much use as it keeps updating everytime I want to use it, so I ignore it for another 3-4 months, then when I want to use it, it does it again so can't. Probably 4 hrs use on a 1200.00 device in 3 yrs. F'em. Never again.

The very best electronic device I have that works all the time? Android phone. Barely ever an issue, updates are quick and not intrusive.

Posting this on my Moto Z force. This phone/computer rocks.

I don't want to cause any more friction here but our private lives are officially over. Basically, if you are doing anything using the electronic frontier , your actions are being followed. Keeping our country purchasing goods is what keeps it alive. They are spying on us for marketing ideas (mostly).

Nope, I don't like it either and I don't know how to avoid it. We are no longer people, we are statistics.

Exactly this!!!!
Creeps me out that they know where I went. People have willingly given up privacy to corporate and government by carrying Cell phones.

I have 5 Apple laptops in the house from 2004-2005. They all still see duty... One just did a semester of college work as a loaner to a friend's kid who needed a basic machine. Some still run OS X, some run Linux... But they all still run.

Android phones run a modified Linux. Apple runs a modified BSD kernel, which is another Unix derivative. Jailbreak and you have access to the Unix underneath... Not much difference between the two.

I dumped my Fire Tablet a few years ago when it became clear that it was just a direct marketing vehicle for Amazon. What is it about tech companies that they come up with a good idea, and then they become so greedy and overbearing that they DRIVE their customers away, screaming?

I currently own a Galaxy Tab S2, but the new S3 looks sharp and is on sale at CostCo. I have a Moto G phone and I love it. Android rocks!

+1 on the Mac. My MacBook pro is still working, bought in 2010. ( Maybe 2009). Although all it's used for is the internet, it works at 80% which works for me.

Don't know tech well enough to jailbreak. They just need to work.,

Moto is the best. Had Moto x first gen ( built in Texas) then 3rd gen, now on the moto force.

My Samsung Galaxy S7 (the non-exploding S7) works. I don't have to think about it. I like that.

Now if I could just stop falling on the screen...:bang:

If it weren't a locked down version of Linux, you could ssh into it from another phone and run it without a screen. :p

That might be just a tad impractical, though... :p
