I Finally Did It!!

Runs with Scissors

Converted to a 1x10 today. FD is gone, front shifter is gone. Went with a Wolftooth 34t for the front, still have the 11-36 ten speed in the back. I guess I'll see how it goes on the next ride...

I've been riding pretty much everything lately in the 38t, including last weekend's jaunt up above Mt Baldy Village and Icehouse Cyn. So I figured keeping the existing cassette and RD was not only cheaper, but will probably work out fine. And if I have to walk a couple areas going forward, well, I will just have to work on getting stronger. :)

Hope it works good for you and will like to hear reports from a new convert :)
Curious, you have a XT 2X crankset, and you mounted the 34 ring in the position of the old 38, and removed the small ring, right? Is the chain line good enough for running the 34 in the "big ring" position, or was the new 34 you put on offset a little to the inside to help center the ring to the cassette center?

So, roughly 1,300 miles later, I still have the same Wolftooth 34T chainring...how do we tell when it needs to be replaced? Obviously I'm not shifting the chainring....

And to report in on how I like it....I LIKE IT!!!! The setup has been great. I have only hit maybe 3 spots where I really shouldn't be pedaling and have to get off and walk, all on Main Divide (the WOD on GE doesn't count - I won't do it again anyway ). I may never change until the 10 speed is no longer available.

It has definitely made me think more about cadence and how hard to push while considering the length of the ride I'm on. This is not a bad thing.

Same as a geared chainring.....even though you are not shifting, the teeth will still begin to hook and you will still get chainsuck. If the chain starts jumping off the ring on a regular basis it is worn.

As long as you replace the chain before it stretches too much, you should be able to get several chains out of a chainring.

Wow! I haven't gotten nearly that many miles out of my 1x chainrings. Although I probably could have squeezed more miles out of them. When they're worn I notice a grinding/roughness in my drivetrain that usually starts as the teeth develop a hook shape, but before it starts causing chain suck. At that point the bike doesn't feel smooth and quiet anymore, so it's time for me to replace.:)

Before I switched to direct mount, I did have some success squeezing more miles out by flipping my wolftooth ring around backwards since the backside of each tooth still looked fine.
