Hi kids,
I'm going to be leading a GGR ride in April on GE and it's been awhile since I was there.
We'll go up the fire road and down GE. I might be pre riding it Saturday but I'm not sure.
I think I remember where GE starts off the fire road, it's by a fence line at the top of a rise, correct?
I don't plan on hitting the "other" trail up there and would like to stay away from that.
Do any of you have any Strava uploads or map/trail details? I didn't find GE on MTBProject.
I need the mileage from the Sanberg start to singletrack finish. Elevation gain and miles.
Also, how is the clearance through the sticker bushes?
Any help would be appreciated.

Liz has joined us? How cool!!!!

Hi Liz! GE is fun, and the section of SOT seems to have a LOT of tire tracks on it. I am sure Mikie or his band of merry misfits will post the data you are looking for. (Waving Smiley)

Oh mighty @dirtmistress , :notworthy:
imtbtrails has so much more than other sites... to include a Trail Inventory Forum that will continue to grow!
Here is the link to Golden Eagle in said forum.. "Trails"
http://www.imtbtrails.com/forum/threads/golden-eagle.3025/

It has pics, it has map view, it has a .gpx file that you can download into a Garmin that you can then follow and never ever get lost....
I know you are looking for the alternate route up the fire road. I will get that loaded up tonight asap as well.

How is it for beginner riders? I'm thinking about taking a couple friends up there...possibly my GF.

Depending on their endurance, it should be doable. That last downhill has some sketchy exposure portions that might be questionable. However, bailing out and going down the fireroad you climb up instead of taking the (fun) singletrack down is a totally viable option if the beginner is feeling overwhelmed when they get to that point. Outside of that exposure section on the ST, just slowing down should make everything on the singletrack imminently doable for a beginner I'd say.

Then again, I've only ridden it once and maybe I've got rose colored glasses from my single ride and things are a bit more technical than I remember. Some of the guys/gals here that frequent it might be able to better speak to it's state for beginners. Either way, the fireroad decent is absolutely there for beginners.

My 2 cents. How beginner are they? They need to have the stamina to do a long climb.
Plenty of water and food to keep the bonk in check are also a must.
It can be difficult if you don't go with someone that knows it. It's easy to get turned around up there.
Temp. can drop pretty quick too.

I think my GF will be ok on the climb...exposure is what she doesn't like. Three hours is typically her upper limit...after that she just wants to kill me. :cautious::whistling:

My buddy is what kinda concerns me when it comes to longer climbs.

I've found some gps files I could upload onto my Garmin.

Mazinger,
Follow this link I have all the info you need to include both .gpx versions so can download to your Garmin to do the the fire road climb and the whole or part of the trail...

At the bottom of the first post you will see "GPX Viewer" you can click on those and it will bring up a large map so you can see all the details. As well, below those are the .gpx files you can download for either route. Just place them in your gpx folder on your Garmin. :)

That last downhill has some sketchy exposure portions that might be questionable. .

Even I, the self-appointed king of anti-sketch and -exposure, didn't find that part too daunting. I just unclipped and went very slowly through it.

The rest was, as they say, grin-inducing. But yes, a decent level of fitness is a must to truly enjoy it. I liked it, but the initial fire road climb can be hard on a beginner.
