Get Filthy on Halloween 2015!

I'm seriously thinking of giving this one a go.... The entire course uses (part of) the Crest to Coast Trail that CarlS bike packed not too long ago. After re-reading his report more than a few times, I think it would make for a really fun single day ride. Long, but fun... Not much elevation gain for the 80 miles. I'll think of the Filthy 50 as a scouting venture for part of the ride.

I wonder if there would be any interest in the CTC ride?

Hey Steve, if you go look for me... say "hi" I will have a red&white goat jersey on and riding a bright yellow Air9 RDO hanging out with the bike shop Temecula group. I'm doing the sport men's 50 I may even be sporting a evil goat mask, who knows... you should come on out. it will be fun. Super fast course with big ring haul ass sections Hope to see ya there.

I have no obligations next weekend, so I will probably be there. I should know for sure, and sign up in the next day or so.

Dark blue el Mariachi with orange bars and orange skewers...

I went to sign up, and the event is full! Good thing for them...

I sent an email asking to be on the waiting list, but we shall see. I may have to do my own Halloween event. :(

Good for them indeed!

Shoulda got in on the second batch of SART Hell Ride shuttle tickets!

I want to do this ride. I'm in no shape to do it but I wil just rely on my years of base miles. I have heard we can self shuttle this. Is anyone interested?

Are you talking about the entire route from Julian to the ocean? I'd be interested! That would be my biggest mileage day on the mountain bike, but there's only 4,000 feet of climbing.

Edit: We won't get J interested, unless we tell him he can do the climbs twice... :whistling:

I'm just talking about the event for this Saturday's ride. I thought it ended at The Hangar for some food and brewski's...

That's the SART Hell Ride... This is the Filthy 50 thread. I thought I was talking you into an 80 mile pain excursion!

yes about the CTC in one day, if you didn't have a 50 lbs rig you could make it in much better time. but beware, there is not really any water replenishing spots before hodges. as you can see in the pics MTB Bill and a few others used filters from a cattle trough. I was fine to wait and refill at hodges on Day 2, but I had carried about 170 oz and that was cutting it close. There is a fair amount of pavement connectors on two long sections so don't be expecting some awesome exciting single track MTB bliss. more like a multi surface epic. A little of everything. David Hekel wrote a great blog about his one day trip on it here if you have not read: http://sdrprangerdave.blogspot.com/2015/02/a-bike-ride-down-coast-to-crest-trail.html

I may be up for doing this one as an all day trip in the spring time if you want to wait until then. Some green grass, flowers, and water would make this route really nice and enjoyable. It was so damn dry and hot when we went.

I've been using Google Earth to follow the route, and see the mixed terrain. It looks like a blast for me, but all of my rides have a road component, and I like that kind of ride. I can see how it would put some people off...

As far as a date, I haven't thought that far out yet. I have a feeling that RWS would be interested and maybe even mtnbikej. Let's see what they have to say about dates...

I am generally open.....meaning I rarely have commitments.

keep in mind there can be snow up at Julian in winter. could make things very interesting to say the least

Snow? I grew up in Buffalo... If it's not over the front door of the house, it's not worth mentioning! Just kidding... I can't take much anymore, even though I did the polar bear plunge a few times through the ice of a frozen Lake Erie.

I have barbecued in -15, however... New Years Eve isn't the same without steaks and lobster on the grill.

That "south" picture is Los Angeles at the first rainfall. Sheesh.

I lived in Salt Lake City for three years, drove a '73 Chevelle all over Utah, eastern Nevada and western Wyoming and never owned tire chains. And never got stuck.

Back to topic. FF is one seriously fast freekin race. I thought a realistic goal would be 4 hours for me. However on race day, I found myself chasing tires and got sucked into a few good drafts for the first two hours and 30 miles went by just like that. Didn't stop at any aid stations until just after 30 miles and grabbed a gatoraid and banana. Was going real good right until the last 10 miles going back over raptor. I cleaned raptor but then on the other side I tried to turn it up again and both legs completely locked up. I had to walk it off for about 10-15 minutes. Finished at 3.35 probably the fastest 47 miles I have ever done on dirt.
