Garmin Stuff

Runs with Scissors

So, mostly just to completely discharge the battery but also to see what would happen, I turned on my Garmin 500 Edge, it found the satellites, and I've got it sitting on my desk. 3 hours later, it has gained 90 feet elevation, and traveled .24 miles, at an average speed of 0.2 mph. While sitting on the desk. Okay, so it made a couple trips to the kitchen (IPA runs), but that's no more than 40 feet away and I can state unequivocally that there are no elevation changes involved.

Isn't technology wonderful?

So- You're saying I can pad my miles just by turning the Garmin on in the house? Genius!

Just kidding... Put away the pitchforks.

And our GPS trackers like to be moving, to smooth things out.
Trail work on the way up, pretty accurate on the ride down...

No, silly.....just leave it on while the bike is on the back of the car and drive it around.....100% believable that you were able to to 75 MPH on your mtn bike for 10-20 miles.

Using my phone to track a workout (heart rate), I will sometimes find that the GPS says I've run half a mile...on a treadmill.

I actually stumbled across a Strava whore who was uploading (and therefore making it completely obvious) from both his Garmin and his Strava app on the phone for the same rides...thereby doubling his mileage and elevation gain. Showed something like 400,000 feet elevation gain, and some insane miles, for the year already in April.

Now, I'm sure there are people who can do that, if they don't have to work and can ride all day, every day. But c'mon, if you're going to do it this guy's way at least be subtle about it. Sheesh!!
