2 Bottles may be a little light. There is no water available past about 1 mile into Silverado Canyon. Actually neither route has any water. You COULD stash some water at the bottom of Motorway. However that is still a stout 2nd loop on 2 bottles. 2 would be fine for the first loop MS/MW.....but I would prefer 3 on the back half.

I had done Maple to Motorway before (but never Joplin), why is the tree farm part of the loop (if you end up at the bottom of SST)?

It looks like you gotta start somewhere.

From the Tree Farm up Silverado is a nice warm up before you get to Maple Springs.

Kinda like asking......if you are going to do Counting Coup on your own, where would you park your car and start?

Plus after 7500' of climbing, the last thing you wanna do is have to climb up Silverado Canyon.

I am tentatively in for at least the first loop! I've been fighting the crud the entire time we were in Big Bear, so I don't want to overpromise... I was just starting to feel good on the bike again, so I'm hopeful!

Jason had to point out the "spring" the first couple times we rode it... It's more of a wet dirt patch than an actual spring.

Is there a spring at Maple Springs? ;) Because of the weather, I will be bringing a water back pack (for water and storing layers) and will have two bottles.

Not if lower Joplin is involved! So tempted but I don't think I have 8k in me either. Plus 7:am in OC is a bit much...

So... Figure 3 hours for the group to finish Motorway which ends right at the start of the Maple Springs climb... And join for the second loop to Joplin! That would make it (roughly) 10:00.

Edit: Tim would comfortably finish that loop faster than 3 hours, but as it's his first time on that end of the mountain range, there will be some "Oh, wow" moments with the views...

A respectful fyi:

'Lower Joplin' is actually below Old Camp off the STT, starting just past the top of Cadillac and dropping to Rose Canyon. A super fun trail and coincidentally like a mellow Motorway. But OCTA decided the best way to mitigate their bus system on city streets was to shut outdoor enthusiasts out of the outdoors. So they bought land at the bottom of the trail and blocked legal egress.

Middle Joplin is the key descent on this ride, from the North Main Divide down to Old Camp. And yeah, good place to drop your seat, er..saddle. You could even throw it away, but you might need it later.

Which really bites... I can see it from my bedroom window and I've never ridden it! Having access to it would really open up some nice loops.

You can ride it without controversy by descending from the STT; then turning around and climbing back up it. It's as good a climb as it is a descent. Probably super pretty right now, too. If you choose to ride it this way, consider turning around at the big washout. Otherwise it gets a little H.A.Bikie. Oh, and watch out for hidden rocks in the brush.. there might be a couple foot-breakers.
