Speaking of Los Angeles, this Sunday the 8th is CicLAvia. This is an amazing amount of fun, and INCREDIBLY family friendly. One day-long bike festival. Lots of food everywhere, 100,000 people on bikes, car-free streets, everyone is happy. What's not to like!?!?!?

This one goes right by the Bradbury building, so all you Blade Runner fans can go check out J.F. Sebastian's digs!

How do you get usually get out to Ciclavia?

I've done it a couple ways. If we're on our tandem, I drive out and street park near one of the hubs, usually Mariachi Plaza or Echo Park. I'm going to try to find parking around Main/Spring area near Chinatown this year though (Was AWESOME when they ran a cyclocross race at the LA Historical Park there. Golden Road Brewery was giving at free beer for a donation... it was a BLAST!).

If you're all on singles, getting on the Gold line in Passadena (or now Monrovia) works really good as well. Take it out to Chinatown and get off there. That's the best option IMHO.

You rode your tandem out on the CX course?
Those downtown races were fun, not much for elevation change. They even had single speed CX world championships there.
For the DT Ciclavia from OC, taking Metrolink or Amtrak to Union Station works pretty well.
Metrolink is only $10 RT on weekend, but can be too crowded.
Amtrak is pricier, but you can reserve your bike spot.
Gonna miss this one with a CX race at Irvine Lake.

Oh no, I see why you thought that... I mentioned riding a tandem there. But no, I was just drinking beer and watching the race! But they were definitely racing it... was awesome!

Really fun time yesterday! Maybe rode a total of three miles! Parked by Chinatown, rode Broadway south to Grand Central Market. Had a FANTASTIC meal there, meandered around, rode through the Second St. tunnel, meandered some more, Thrifty's ice cream stop, Blue Bottle coffee stop, packed up and drove home! Then had the mandatory In-N-Out dinner in BP!

It wasn't terribly crowded, but movement and business the whole time. Highly recommend going to GCM for food, beer, even a market... that was probably the highlight of the trip! Well, doing u-turns and riding back and forth through the tunnel is pretty cool as well! Looking at my pics, I notice that our family tends to go to the October one. This is our fifth one! The next one is Wilshire Blvd, which isn't quite as fun or convenient for out of towners, but still an option!

I was there too, it was fun just to cruise and see all the streets closed, but I really wish my family would have joined me.
I've been there solo with friends, and love seeing the architecture and early/mid-century buildings which I can really dig on w/out kids. But it is 100% a fun family event. Kids almost always bonk, so keeping them hydrated and caloried up is the priority!
