Catalina Gran Fondo 2015

Mr. Hand

Newbie
Myself and a couple of buddies signed up for it this year. Our plan is to take the boat over morning of the race and leave after. This is our first time and we'll be riding the middle route. Does anyone know where we can keep our extra stuff (change of clothes, etc..)? Other than that, I'd like to hear from people who have ridden the race before.

Mikie & me and a few others did the very first Catalina Grand Fonda. We had a blast. . Mikie did the long version I did the middle. For us we had great weather. . But we got there Friday morning & stayed till sunday. stayed in a motel, some camped at hermit gulcth There are lockers there to store gear at the dock, make reservations early for boat and ect. hope that helps. :), thank you, Robin.. the volunteers were wonderful. Have fun:)

I'm seriously kicking this around... I was worried about time, as I may very well be DFL, but I see there is a 7:00PM boat that day back to Dana Point. I'm going to check the calendar tonight, and see what the wife thinks...

After watching the oldest male offspring become Winter Formal king last night, and telling the wife that Herz says they will all try to reproduce on the dance floor, my wife issued a challenge over our late sushi date...

I went back and forth about registering for the Catalina ride, because I'm also doing Rwanda, the tour de Palm Springs, The Big Ring, and probably the Julian Death March. But, then the wife has to make a comment about my old age, and apparent inability to recover quickly from these rides. That did it... I'm registered for the whole enchilada, and the boat trip is booked! Thank you, Honey, for the nudge I needed.

I see that the grades coming back out of Two Harbors are 25%. I think that's slightly steeper than the base of Dreaded in Whiting. Sounds like fun! :o

one of many MTB camping adventures on the island of Catalina :) Have a Great time! Faust 29 thank you, best, Robin

That video is incredible! I'm going to have to tell myself to keep pedaling, and not stop every 2 minutes to take pictures!

I should probably order a couple extra batteries for the GoPro. :-)

Are they going to have the 2015 Julian Death March?

I guess Rich was done with the event, but there is a new promoter who has picked up the ball. I received an email survey a couple months back, and then a follow-up email indicating that the event would be held once again. I posted the last email I received in another thread in this sub-forum awhile back.

From the December email:

The Julian Death March Continues!

Death March riders were disappointed earlier this year to learn that Rich Wolf would no longer be promoting the Julian Death March. Luckily, we were able to take over the event that Rich built over the years, we'll be able to add our own flavor and enthusiasm. Right now we are targeting a fall date of some sort. Keep an eye out on your email or follow @crankcycling to make sure you are in the loop.

Two days to Catalina... I think I've memorized the map and elevation chart. :-)

Is anyone else going?

My neighbor recently did the 50 mile run on Catalina, and it rained on him the entire route! I'm hoping for a little better luck... The forecast I saw shows it partly cloudy by Saturday.

Good luck on it! Looking forward to the ride report. Hope it doesn't turn out as a mud run/slog/ride.

8,000+ feet in the mud and I may opt for the shorter route!
