Bless Me Father for I have Sinned...

Mikie

. . . . It's been 2 weeks since I rode my bike. And since it is Sunday and the rain is pouring down in Lebec it will be another week...

Mikie gets crabby when mikie gets no bikey, he no likey... :(

I'm on my 4th 805 on an empty stomach so this could get entertaining ;)
None the less, I have been off the bike for two weeks cuz, once again in training for Kokopelli I have overdone it, and have tendonitis in my right Achilles heel.

So...
I said to myself, "Self? May as well pull the Fork and send it in to Fox to get it rebuilt."

So I call Fox (as I'm on hold it states I have one minute to be the next customer, and that goes on for the next 20 minutes) Tom from Fox, a descent sounding dude directs me to their new online RA Number generating site and I pull an RA to send in my fork. I ask him about any suggestions for a box to ship it and he says, "Oh, stop by any Bike Shop, they will have plenty of Fork Boxes."

Local Bike Shop Myth Buster Number 1: They don't have plenty of Fork Boxes. I went to 4 shops. Even the biggest shop in Bakersfield, Action Sports...

So...
At the last shop I stopped at ( I won't mention their name) -->Finish Line Bike <-- located at 8850 Stockdale Hwy, Bakersfield, CA 93311 (661) 833-6268
okay . . . I lied...

I walk in and ask for a Fork Box to ship my Fox Fork back to Fox for service...

The Mechanics at said shop say, "Why do you need a Fork Box to send your fork back to Fox?"

I say, "Because it needs service, and I'm looking for a box to send it in."

THEY SAY, "Why would you send it to FOX, when we are the premier Southern California Fox Service Center".

I'm thinking, Wow, I didn't know that...

They continue, "We stock most all the parts and why would you ship it to them and have them do what we can? It saves you shipping, we are cheaper, and we guarantee our work."

I explain my Fox Fork woes, and they say, "Bring it in. We are open tomorrow (Sunday) and we will have it back to you in 2 to 3 days."

I say, "That's what Fox says their turn around time is."

They all laugh and say, "Yeah, they have been saying that for years. Never could figure out how they have got away with THAT ONE for so long!"

I should have known something was amiss when they were asking about my fork and I told them that I changed out the splash oil and fork wiper seals and it has never been the same. They were telling me that I had put too much oil in and that it was topping out harsh and not using the full travel.

So I then said, "Okay, YOU show me how to read their F'ed up oil chart and tell me how much oil is supposed to be in my forks!"

After much online search on the Fox site. The much wiser more sage elderly bike tech could not figure it out as well. (sarcasm is beginning to flow here ... :? )

In a bold moment, I stated that I am bringing you guy my fork so you can prove your worthiness. I said, there is a bullshit penalty if you fail as I own imtbtrails!
They all gasped and shifted backwards and they all said, "Not imtbtrails!"

(No, they really didn't say that . . . but I did hand them biz cards and said there is a penalty for bullshitting me on this one)

Well THAT didn't seem to matter, cuz I went home that night and pulled my fork and took it to them the next day, on that Holy Sunday, only to find them "back pedaling" big time when I asked them to put their performance where their big fat lying mouths were.

Their "resident expert" stated upon asking me a series of questions was, "Well you need to send it to Fox as I do not work on their FIT system..."

WTF? :o (5 1/2 beers later now...)

"Thanks for completely wasting my time", I said. Turns out I had done everything right (per their expert)...and now it was time for Fox to take over. :x

Since they were a Shimano Shoe Dealer, I asked if they had my Shimano SH-M200 shoes in stock and they said no. "So you really don't have anything I need, do you?"

So I took Cathy to Rubios and got my traditional two Fish Taco Plate and went home to box up my Fork without a F'n Fork Box...

Feel sorry for me. I'm buzzed and depressed!

Mikie Out!
(Like a light)

Cathy is trying to resusitate me right now with some Costco Wings...
Have you tried them? They are awesome!

(Herz is right . . . we need the drunk emoticons on imtbtrails)

6 beers? I would be out after three!

I have three fork boxes in my garage, wanna borrow one? Take your choice - X-Fusion, Fox or Marzocchi (I save them). What? Too late? Damn.

I am glad you called BS on them and let them know the social media consequences for BS-ing. I for one will never set foot into that shop! (Of course, I never have and I have no idea where it is).

Now I will compare your Fox story to my Marzocchi story. I posted a problem on a thread about Marzocchi on Pink Bike. Not really bitching, just expressing the odd problem. I received a PM from a Marzocchi dude asking me to call the service number and ask for John. I did. I was on hold for less than one minute. After asking me many very specific questions about the fork's performance and service, he said send it in, and gave me an RA#. I said, "Can I just bring it to you? I work 30 minutes away." He said sure. Dropped it off one day, it was ready the next. No charge. And I got a nifty box!

I don't think I can use this route for routine service, but it was nice to get that kind of attention for a problem that was not routine. They understood the power and value of a positive mention on PinkBike, and a happy customer who talks a lot. They also make great forks.

Support your local bike store... so they'll be there for you when you really need them.
Rob!
Ahhhhhgreed! If you will hear that from anyone, you will hear that from me, but they also require being support worthy.

Firm believer in the bricks and mortar bike shop. It's tough to run a business, especially in the non neccesity category (I can't believe I said that). But let's face it, It's not groceries or electricity or gasoline. So customer service has to be a premium to obtain our attention. I did drive to Bakersfield twice (about a 90 minute drive time round trip) so it's not like I was not willing to support. They made big promises and fell waaaayyyyyy short on delivery...

My Buffalo born taste buds will have to respectfully disagree on the merits of Costco wings... Teresa and Frank from the Anchor Bar are rolling over in their graves!

Some bike shops just baffle me that they're still in business. When Marzocchi was in Valencia you could stop by their shop and if they weren't busy they'd service your fork while you waited. Glad they still take care of their customers.

Wow mikie, "no human could box that fork like that" was in the picture! (movie line.....guess which one?)

hic.... hic.... what did i misz? Since my stallion is @jensons getting the suspension serviced and my left hand is still in re-hab, I spent the day @running springs with my baby girl, and now at home having some cold ones.. sorry to hear they wasted your time mikie, but glad that you show us how to pack a fork inside a pepperoni box !

Last week my left pedal took a beating from a rock that magically appeared in the trail..Which left the pedal sitting crooked on the crankarm. I tried to fix it on the trail but was unable to get enough leverage with a multi tool to get the pedal off. When I get home I realized I didn't have an 8mm allen so i tried the multi tool again with no luck..finish line bikes is the closest shop to my house so I THOUGHT they could do something for me. I was wrong. The mechanic put my bike up on the stand and gave it his all with no luck. He made two more attempts with the same results.. Then he takes my bike off the stand and tells me that when I get a new crankset to bring it in so they can install it.. "OKAY!"........... Thanks finish line!

Not if they suck, lie, cheat or mislead the customer or are arrogant pricks. then we are duty-bound NOT to support them.

Thank you for the public service, Mikie.

Fishing Line Bike...hooking up lunkers since 1984. Nice job getting away!

Nice job, too, on the 805s. I'm with herzman...a cheap date, but still training 8-)

I also have a few fork boxes in various flavors inhabiting the Dirtbag Man-Cave.

Sounds like they were hoping you'd have the open bath Fox fork that is super simple to service. The FIT damper, no so simple. They should have asked before popping off :P
