Bike problems already!!

Seabass

Newbie with Hope!
I have had my bike for one week yesterday. I have gone riding everyday except this past Saturday. And yesterday on our 8 or 9ish mile ride at the end of the ride my bike was making what sounds like metal on metal cracking noise whenever I pedal so took it back to pure cycle where I bought it in MV. Kinda scary anyone else have these problems?

Noises can and will drive you nuts and sometimes what sounds like your bottom bracket creaking turns out to be nowhere near the area like a seat rail.

Are you wiping your chain after rides and brushing your chainring/cassette? Could be a whole lot of things but for me basic maintenance keeps most creaks at bay. I wipe my drivetrain and suspension stancions/seals after EVERY ride, even that quick 8 miler that didn't seem to get my bike dirty. My guess is something may just need to be tightened or lubed up and you'll be back on it in no time.

Hope they fix it today and I will be doing that from now on!!

My favOrite lube is the Dry Lube from Muc-Off. But lube is always a personal choice.

Pretty much everybody gets annoyed by odd noises that show up, and the cause can be many things. The good news is, your shop is taking care of you.

Eventually you'll want to skip trips to the bike shop and start doing some stuff yourself. Not a bad route to ask questions here. Also, any problem you are having, a thousand riders had the same issue, 100 posted online about it, including 10 decent discussions with viable solutions and/or videos to show how they fixed it.

Consider taking a bike repair skills class to get a base. I know REI has them. Get some basic tools, and maybe add a new tool when the need for it arises. You don't have to be able to do everything, but just knowing some basics will keep the bike shop trips down and also better equip you to deal with issues on the trail.

The noise is probably something minor that worked loose. Not a bad idea to snug down any bolts that might work loose every other ride or so.

Nice work with the daily rides!!! Crank on, bassman

I've ridden 12,000 miles in the last few years... My bike has never made a creak. Nope. Not a single noise. :whistling:

Just kidding... The random creak is part of the game. Last week when mtnbikej and I rode, I had an annoying creak, but wasn't sure where it was coming from. Cassette spacers? Single speed cog? Thru bolts not tight? stem bolts? chainring bolts? chain? bottom bracket?

Turns out it was the seat post and clamp. I took it out, cleaned it up, applied a little grease, and the creak was gone. Then my left cleat started creaking on the next ride... I think @mtnbikej was close to making me ride 100 yards behind on Saturday's death march. It was bad... When I got home, I took the cleats off, cleaned them up and retightened them. Hopefully they are quiet for the next ride, so I can focus on whatever new creak pops up. :p

And I'm on a hardtail single speed, which has a lot fewer creak points than a full suspension bike...

After every ride or two, the chain and cassette need to be brushed off and relubed. You won't believe the noises your chain can make when it gets a little dirty and dry.

Bikes are simple.
But with that said, you can chase creaks and grinds until it drives you mad.

My immediate thought is rear derailleur adjustment. New bikes have new parts which often work great in the shop bike stand but can settle in on the trail requiring adjustments.

I think @H2oChick nails it. Get to a clinic and get some learning about bikes101.

Taking a bike too the shop for tune-ups are a great way to support your LBS (Local Bike Shop), but paying them for basic stuff will add up and keep you frustrated. Brake pads, drive train maintenance, squeaks and creaks should be on us to take care of.

But all that comes with time and getting out with other mountain bikers... and Youtube.

Unless you been doing 6 foot flat drops and you cracked your frame, probably just some tweaking you will figure out and skill up over time.

Bike on!

My HT makes noises: left pedal bearing "clicks"; stiff links on the chain "click" on the cassette if I do not keep the chain well lubed; squealing brakes when they are wet of very dusty.

My FS never makes noises, too: BOTH pedals "click"; dropper post seat clamp "groans" when seated over chattered terrain;....

My body makes noises: grunts, groans, snorts, squeals, moans, toots,...:D

Hey, Seabass, if it helps.... You rode your bike in a week as much as many do in three months, and it's brand new, so your need for routine maintenance and tightening things up would be expected. More riding, more maintenance. Enjoy the first-world problem, pal!

After a week of riding..::especially everyday.....and given how dry and dusty it is getting already, most likely just as simple as the chain is dry/dirty. Use a firm bristled brush and scrub the chain and cassette(while on the bike). Wipe off with a rag, and put a drop of lube on each roller of the chain. Back pedal a few times to work in, then wipe off the excess.

If that doesn't solve the problem....then since it is a brand new bike, it may just be the cables settling in, so the RD may be just a hair out of adjustment.

Beyond that....the creaks and the squeaks take a little more investigative work. Also, 8 out of 10 times, what you think is the culprit....is usually not.
