Air Quality

Sorry, D3, but I just can't get worked up over that. Having grown up in SoCal in the 60s and 70s, I remember just how bad it was. The Santa Anas and San Gabriels were mythical mountains that occasionally appeared through the mists, but not very damn often.

The air today is 90% - 95% cleaner than it was then, with more than twice the vehicles and people. We have reached the point of diminishing returns, where the AQMD wants to spend my money for negligible or zero return. Sometimes, you just gotta accept that we've done a really good job cleaning the air, and there ain't much more we can do given how we get around.

Incremental improvements will still be made, but solar and wind are NOT going to solve the problem. Too erratic.

And no, I'm not taking the bus. Or light rail.

Everything the AQMD is doing is preventing the regression Pruitt will result. Antiregression is a huge return on a daily basis. Just keep commuting, and you and I are good.

I remember having to stay indoors during recess because the air was too dirty to play in.

The rate of asthma in kids in the central valley is terrifying.

We have improved. But really, bicycles are only getting marginally better too. Yet we life how great that marginally better front fork feels, and don't desire to stop innovation.

That said, I do ride a 1985 steel road bike. But I did finally upgrade the shifters!

I've often wondered if the aqmd caused the housing bubble and the overpopulation of so cal. 40 years ago the inland empire was an uninhabitable waste of smog and cow flatulence. It wasn't until the aqmd got the air cleaned up that living out there was even conceivable.

The aqmd is also a major contributor to income inequality. Middle class jobs are more polluting than burger flipping and financial engineering. I've seen this drive most of my industry away.

Reducing emissions 90% was good, very good. That next 5% will be as hard as the first 90% and the last 5% will require a genocidal maniac to achieve.

The housing bubble and inflated prices are actually the byproduct of Prop 13. Look at prices and escalation before and after.

AQMD and CARB are both out of control.

I know how it started and I think I know how it will end. It will not be pretty.

A great American poet, I believe it was Faulkner, once said, " I don't know about you, man, but I'm gonna get my kicks before the whole shithouse goes up in flames!"

Gotta love that crunchy SoCal air!
