Hola gents, I know I barely post anymore and I think I've been riding even less. But, I am here to tell about a most excellent experience I recently had dealing with 6D helmets after a near death experience on the trail. A flying monster bug almost killed me. To preface the helmet spoken of in my story was bought off of Pinkbike at least 3 years ago. The seller said it was worn twice and it looked as so. I had no receipt and it was not regisitered w/ 6D. I have been wearing 6D helmets for 5-6 years now and have two of the same model. They have some of the highest safety ratings of all mtb lids, are a bit pricey, and don't look as cool as most. Anyways, my near death experience happened several months ago while on a trail ride. I was heading back to the car from and out and back. 90% of the trails up here are wooded single track. So I'm cruising along in my normal hooting and whistiling way while on a decent that is fun. BOOM! A Bee, a Wasp, a Hornet, a Teradactyl, something flies into a vent on my helmet. I could hear it buzzing and feel it on my bald head! I FREAKED OUT! Slammed the brakes on!!! And, unbuckled my helmet lightning fast. I then grabbed the helmet from the top and pulled it off of my head just as fast. I could still feel and hear the death bug on my head and it felt like the helmet was also still on my head. But, I was holding the helmet in my hand. NO! I was holding the outer shell of the helmet in my hand. The inner shell was still attached to my head with the killer bee. I had tightened down the rear ratchet strap so tight that it kept the helmet attached to my head, ripping the two shells apart. Eventually I got the helmet off and there was no killer bug to be found or evidence of one. 6D helmets are made from two shells held together by spongy pads that make it a magical helmet with insane safety ratings. In my moments of panic I separated the two shells and ripped some of the spongy things up. WTF? After taking a safety break and refocusing I was able to rig the helmet up with some zip ties well enough to finish the ride. Although I did have to tighten the chin strap enough to almost choke.
Fast forward a few months ... I called 6D customer service number and spoke to their rep. Telling him pretty much exactly what I said above. No receipt, I bought it used, no registration. He says take some pics of the helmet and email them to me. That they will look at the pics and let me know if they can help me out in any way. Thirty minutes after sending the email I get a response. Almost word for word.... "Kevin, we want the helmet back. I will send a return label, in the meantime please go to our website and pick out a new ATB-2T helmet of your choosing." Wait! What? That's right, they said I could pick out a brand new helmet. AND the newer model that just came out and replaced the one I had. SCORE!!!!!! I had a new helmet on my stoop in 4 days. Now, I might have to wait 4 months (F'ing snow) before I can try it on trail.
So there it is... 6D helmets stepped up when they really didn't have to. BIG PROPS 6D!!!! IF any of you hooligans are looking for a new helmet, consider 6D. They check all the boxes for me and I'll keep using them for many years.
