3 weeks in

Wednesday was 3 weeks since the helicopter ride.
My mobility is improving and the constant pain is gone. The pain is now stabbing alerts from my back and ribs that excruciatingly tell me that certain movements are still taboo.
Sleep is getting better, still not great.
I've been on the trainer in my garage, putting in an hour a day, staring at the blue skies, chained to the ground.
Today I said "F# it!" and went for a ride.
My bike was dying to be ridden. New chainrings, cogset, chain, rotors, and brake pads. New cables and housing too! Can't forget the wheel set I built, either.
I just rode up Brown Mtn, a former fireroad turned into a moderate grade singletrack. I purposely rode up slowly, enjoying the beautiful day, and monitoring my body as I went.
Breathing was better than I expected, only painful if I inhaled/exhaled forcefully. Note to self-dont do that!
My back was loosening and tightening and popping, but mostly good feelings.
Climbing was ok, downhill I needed to be extra careful as maneuvering could get painful, especially my core area. Definitely gotta do some core work when the ribs heal.
The ride went well enough that I am planning on making it to the GE ride this Saturday.
What's your excuse?

When I broke my ribs, I could not ride for 3 weeks also. Nursed it on a few rides and even did one with Mikie. Eventually It got good enough ride hard. I have been there, sleeping, sitting and moving, everything hurts. I am feeling for you. Heal up quickly.

You're crazy Ross!!

When I was an avid runner (running sub 6min miles) I tore a groin muscle doing intervals (I was trying to get faster).

I had to stop running for TWO months. It killed me. But my running friend said to me: Would you rather not run for two months or not run the rest of your life??

Take heed....please don't push it, or just put your bikes up for sale now. ;)

Thanks for the concern. I was fully prepared to turn around at the first sign of something going wrong. Mileage was 8, been doing 15 to 16 on the trainer so I feel like I was ready.
I'm a big believer in movement. When you stop moving you start dying.
Gonna stick to fireroads for a while though.....

I, too, believe in movement. Moreover, your body needs to heal completely especially at our age.

But hey, "live and let live" is my motto!!

Ride on.....:p

Rossage - I applaud your determination, and I agree with "keep moving." I also agree with Rox that too much too soon could be hazardous and infinitely prolong your agony. Perhaps a compromise would be this - give yourself lots of space between your rides. Like a week. The rides will challenge your healing - so let it catch up.

But that's just an opinion - and you know what they say about opinions...

So, I didn't make the ride anyway. I felt so good that I decided I needed to go tubeless for this ride and I paid the price.
I have Specialized 2.3 FastTrack/renegade and have them mounted on Wtb i23 rims.
1st wheel went easy, the second kicked my ass. The furious pumping did a number on my spine. You can quote me on that! My back got real stiff and I was in no shape to ride.
Next time.....
For now, baby steps.....
