This sport is like nothing I've ever experienced! Amazing kids and events! First Lake Perris and now Vail Lake were great with cool and rainy weather. Vail was pretty miserable for bystanders by the end of the day, but great for cooling you down on the course!

My son's team, the Redlands Composite, is doing GREAT lead by our freshman phenom who took first in both events. Also a fantastic varsity athlete who unfortunately had an accident between the two races, but is on the mend. Small team w/ only 10 athletes, but they are consistently getting on the podium and having a great time!

And the girl's varsity racing is CRAZY! Competition between national champion holders and contenders!!! If you can check out any of the races, do yourself a favor and go out to one. A positive vibe like I've never experienced! Really, if you've been to other races, even junior leagues, but not these, it will blow your mind. The camaraderie, thoughtfulness, and pure sportmanship will make you feel pretty good about the future!

Anyone else have kids out there doing this???

They are having a NICA race at Keyesville and I am go to do Some trail work this weekend so the kids have a great course to race on.
We'll be up there appreciating it on the 26th! Coming up on the 25th and camping/riding the day before... expecting good things from you!!! :-)

Sunday I was riding at Bonelli in San dimas and found myself riding among the Damien HS mtn bike team working out. Pretty cool to see these youngsters working out. Wish they had this sport when I was in High School!!

Yes, those are amazing kids and amazing racers. The changes in the kids from the beginning of a season to the end are just wonderful. Here are a few other SCV area kids. Also featured a couple of great coaches.

Yea. Garrett "warped" his back wheel so it would not pass through the frame. He dispensed with the rear wheel, but wanted to finish for the points and to not be a quitter, so he picked up his bike and started running--several miles. He's a super fun kid with a great attitude and always says things like "100% coach" or "no days off." He adds real character to the team!

Wow! All I can say is wow after being up in Keyesville this last weekend. That place is magic! The three hour drive back home after a day of walking around for eight hours and a night of camping not-sleeping was rough, but so worth it! I have never been in this area, and it is just incredibly amazing. The racing was great, on a real mountain bike course for lack of better description. Beautiful camping on open BLM land. The Kern River right there. Fast, fantastic, and fun kids riding bikes everywhere. I wouldn't mind going out and doing this again!

I was up there yesterday doing some cleanup from the last two weeks. Some More trail maintenance. Glad you had a good time up there.
Hopefully we didn't leave you too much work! Everyone definitely had a great time out there. The drive back... well, that's what you gotta' do to get out into the mountains!!!

Yes, Keyesville is great and it's the best mountain bike course on the high school circuit for sure. The SCV kids did really well, except my son Parker who was towards the front of the varsity pack when he did a manual through one of the water crossings and broke his carbon rim and flatted. He fell to the back of the pack and worked hard to come back up to a decent finish. The speed those kids run is amazing. A friend shot this video where Parker cracked the rim. Listen and you can hear it!

My second pic is from that same water crossing! I was going to watch the boy's varsity race from that spot, but got distracted. Great spot, minus the huge rocks that'll take you out! Sorry Parker had that mechanical :-(

Fun times this weekend at Vail Lake! This MTB season went there twice, with this being the second race there. Weather was absolutely perfect for racing, other than some wind in the afternoon. Fast, fun course, that had less climbing than the first race (878 vs 1,019 over 11.5 miles for two laps). My son's rear shifter broke about five minutes in, which froze the rear derailer in place (mid-range). He luckily had a triple front, so was able to have a high, medium, and low-ish gear, but that was it. Slow times for him, but he finished and said it was his best race... go figure! Another kid on the team, a FANTASTIC rider in contention for podium had a bee fly into his open mouth and sting him on the roof of his mouth!!!! And yes, he is allergic to bees. Still finished though... these kids are crazy/amazing!
