I Rode My Bike Today...

Now to the fun part!!! :sneaky: The reason I was only running the big ring albeit a 44 is I pulled the trigger on a 2014 Yeti 575 27.5 1x11 with some upgrades from Jenson USA. I get her on Tuesday and will throw my stepson on my bike (2008 Trek Fuel EX 8 26"). :whistling:

Very cool that you are back at it. Sorry to hear about your OTB and the ribs, and I completely do not get why you had to stay in 44 because you are buying a Yeti 575. If you were practicing for a 1x11 experience, you could have stayed in your 32t middle chainring for a closer approximation.

Oh well - great to hear about the Yeti! Heal those ribs.

Because my A** is really out of shape and I had to start in a gear I could ride to try and get ready for the 1x.

Ummmmmm.... the 44 is your hardest gear in front. But you knew that, right? I am not following your logic. Any riding will get you ready for the 1x.

Oh well, it doesn't matter. Do what you must, but get out there!

So today was technically my second ride but it was my first ride on real trails in over 3 years. I stayed close to the house and road Sky Canyon plus some extra. I did the whole ride staying on my big ring (44) up front and only shifting the rear (more on that later). I rode to the "trailhead" and dropped in from the north. I hit the trail then stop, oh wait this isn't it :stop:, bushwhack, bushwhack, bushwhack here it is. I start again and then stop :stop:, bushwhack, bushwhack, bushwhack and third times a charm :Roflmao. I roll out and 50' down the trail OTB!! I land on my right arm and I just know I'm going to break my collarbone but I don't. I just managed to bruise my ribs on the right side. I carefully roll out again and other then getting of track a bit from time to time I roll through the canyon.

I head out to do my little plus loop and head back to the canyon on the way home. I come upon another rider heading south over Cal Oaks. (hello if you are on here) I then start riding parts of the canyon that did not have trails when I last rode there. It was some fun single track hugging the edge on the hill rolling in and out with the fingers of land. I meet two more guys that just came down from the cross. (hi to you too)

I proceed out of the canyon as best as I can. My legs were shot at this point so there was more HAB then I wanted but not as bas as I thought I would have. I ended up with just over 13 miles and 844' of climb (I know) in just over 2 hours of riding. I know it's nothing for you guys but it's a start for me.

Sounds like you had an adventure on your first ride back! Nice job... And 844' is a good start, and almost 1 full Herz Unit! And, I'll call it almost a 1000' more than most people get sitting on the couch.

Monrovia Canyon to Chantry Flats via Rincon amd Newcombs Pass. This ride is great cuz I can do it right from my doorstep. Rode w a couple locals Karl and Oscar, strong riders. They have ridden this route many times but this was only my second. Great ride overall. The initial climb to White Saddle really kicked my butt since it was the hottest part of the the day 330 ish, took me longer than usual. Thought about bailing out but fought through and completed the whole loop.

I was pretty beat for the Chantry descent and luckily made it out cuz the penalty for failure in many places is most certain death! A little dissapointed in my overall time to complete the loop, only beat my previous time by 8 mins. Still a great ride with two cool dudes that tolerated my slow pace today lol!

That looks like a cool ride... Glad we avoided that certain death part.

I rode today... A quick out and back on the Bell Trail. I don't usually set out for a PR, but I also don't usually have gears on the bike. The hikers were few, and I was flying along. Then, I met "horse lady", whose mission in life was to educate every biker she passed on proper trail etiquette involving horses. I may disagree with the 300 yard "stop, shout, and wave wildly", but she strongly recommended it. o_O

Can't see Santiago Peak or San Juan... But we'll be up there tomorrow.

Extremely high gravity on Holy Jim and Main Divide today. In homage to my hardtail awaiting a part, tried to stay out of the lower gears, and I paid the price by the time I reached the SB Wall. The day warmed right up with the dissipating of cloud cover, and it became a nice riding day, if a little dusty and warm. The black flies were few and not too aggro, but the deer flies were biting. Lots of polite trail users of every sort, users on every trail I rode. I tidied up some trash and tagging before escaping down West Horsethief.

Well... we DID ride our Bikes...
Voodoo Tom and I were trying to figure out what we wanted to do today. Everybody finally jumped in at the last minute (Golden Eagle, McGill, etc...) but we committed to the @Maddog 20/20 5 Deer loop-dee-loop.
We tried but didn't go as planned. Gnats on the fire road climbs were tough. The 5 Deer Trail was in horrible shape. I mean horrible. Did I get across that it was h.o.r.r.i.b.l.e.? Super rutted in a bad way, totally moto'ed out, terraced, rutted, and eroded. Very overgrown and appears to be a lot of poison oak, although at this point we might be unscathed. When we got back to the fire road climb we started to climb and had second thoughts. We had seen tons of bonafide backpackers everywhere (like there is some kind of an event). So instead of being jackwads and insisting upon our self justified rights to ride some sweet SOT, we chose to take the higher ground, turn around and call it a day. We both felt a little short changed but then we looked and nearly got 15 miles. Just goes to show fitness when you do 15 miles and feel cheated. HA HA!
Even still... a day in the saddle!:)

Did a short spin and while putting the new kneepads a girls passed by walking and stop to chat a bit, Isabel, she is from Germany and she is an exchange student in corona, she was riding an old K2 ht and she said back at home there are forest and that she doesn't need to ride a lot to have fun, since there lots of trails on her backyard, and she have a FS CUBE, I told her to go and check BB since the bike lark is open but saddly she is coming back to Germany in a week, she planned to pedal more and was out of water and of course I offered mine (like 20oz mixed with tailwind) and she was very happy, we said our goodbyes and down I rode ;)

Wait til you get to the point where a 30 mile out of 55 mile ride, you feel cheated.:p

Cholla-Rock-It-Mathis-Meadows. Test run of new hand on Rock-It. For those who don't know the trail, it's a hoot - with a 300 yard long straight rock garden (actually, petrified sand I think) with repeating foot-deep holes to keep you honest. Go fast to stay on top of them and dial in your suspension and tire pressure! This was a good test for the hand - and it passed! I did about 87.43% of my normal speed - no problems.

While climbing Mathis, here it comes - the weekly helicopter rescue. This time, a fellow rider down on Car Wreck. Rumors were broken ankle and not much else. Sucks, but better than a spine, neck or head injury. Y'know, when you break your ankle in adult league basketball, softball or soccer, you generally don't require the same dramatic response from medical personnel, and probably don't have an airlift bill to contend with. Our sport is certainly unique in that aspect.

Very wet across Alta Laguna with both fog and drizzle. I had to ditch the glasses for the descent down meadows. Fun trail.

I am still a bit tentative, and probably will be for another few weeks. Then I'll join @StrandLeper as he takes me down "The Goods" in the area. Unlike Strand, I do not like riding any of the tough stuff by myself.

That is all. Bikes are fun!

I went out for a short ride today......

Ladies choice, and my wife chose to go to Monroe Truck Trail.

She set the pace, I followed. Pretty quiet up there for a holiday weekend and we didn't start til about 9:15.

Trail is ok down low....most of the water crossings are dry. As you start to the climb, the trail is getting very overgrown. Poison Oak is everywhere. Was cool and cloudy, but humid when we started. Got warm and sunny, yet humid towards the top.

Fun run down. Good ride with the Mrs.

Rode the oaks with Vincent, Ray, Ryan and Pete. Overcast weather was near perfect. Goat, Cactus, Bee, Yucca, Coachwhip, Barham, Chutes and the usual 2 playgrounds. Vincent beat me down chutes by 21 seconds and is in the top 9%. My front started to wash out, had to unclip and dab but before I could do so it caught traction but Vincent was on and gone. Almost time to replace that tire (I keep saying that :bang:). Haven't ridden with Pete in a long time. He's back from being out of the scene and built up a rather nice WFO. Ryan showed us how to catch air once again just north of Robbers (where my avatar was taken). Ray having a good time sweeping and chatting it up. Surprisingly not a whole lot of people out on the trails for a holiday weekend, some yes but not overcrowded. Great way to start the weekend.

Yep, rode my bike today. Had to see what I had in the tank given how little I've ridden lately. Looks like the running (well, jogging) is keeping the legs going.... no personal records were endangered during the commission of today's climb, but it was a good ride nonetheless. Although it did seem to be about my limit for now. Gotta get back at it!!

Someone is getting his mojo back... Having done it, I know that's a good ride... nice trail, scenic pavement and a fun time coming down.

I rode my bike today. And @Danimal joined me for a little bit (one lap through Whiting). My friend Scott was re-united with his love of MtB after we rode last week and he decided it's already time to upgrade his 1999 Stumpjumper - so he demo-ed bikes today. See post here for details about the bikes and the ride.

I had two fun romps through Whiting while being the suspension and setup guru for Scott (who has his own knowledge from moto). After lunch we hit Aliso for a quick Coyote-Cholla-Rock-It-Coyote run. We were going to do more, but Scott's third bike was a dismal failure. Pity, because it was the one he was most looking forward to riding. I on the other hand, had a smokin' run on Rock-It. My bike is finally dialed, and I'm getting to know it well. Oh, and my hand seems to be working just fine. I can't wait to get back to some of the more challenging runs and maybe some new terrain.

The weather was perfect today - overcast and cool all day. I'm guessing about 2500' of climbing. Bikes are fun  (and sometimes frustrating).

I rode CHSP with an old friend and his group (5 total) after work perfect riding weather, started on Elinvar entrance and got to the horse stable tru the paved road and started HaB on a trail named "Corral" and after the HaB nothing but fun ST with exposure to keep you on your toes, did some exploring and rode like 15 miles total, got my bottle of tailwind and used only 2/3 of it, them used almost the whole camelbak LOL. Great ride on new dirt and made new friends !
IMAG0643.jpg

One of them got a flat and while waiting for him they put the bikes upsidedown, don't know why...

I get to spend very few mornings relaxing at the pad. Probably one per month. So when I am not meeting folks, my 630 departure can easily turn to 8. Make coffee, read the news, sit by the fire pit... Aaahhhh. So I left late, then felt the wind whipping thru my hair on the climb up to TOW ... Wait, wind whipping through my hair??? No helmet. (wTH???) Turn around, ride home, grab my helmet. Aliso was Crowded! So I did a quick run down rock it, dropped 5 oaks, climbed cholla, then dropped stairs. Now what? The trail out to Nix was almost perfect a few weeks ago, so out to Nix and back. Call wife to see how her morning is shaping up. Gotta be home by 1130, preferably with iced tea in hand, so I rode back into town. Not the ride I wanted, but it was super fun. Lots of friendly folks out. On the Bronson.

Can't wait for @herzalot to show me some skills!

Super slow 5 oaks run bcz I stopped to grab a bottle that someone lost.

Ran one bottle and took no nutrition. Felt good.

25/4000 ish good times!

I had high hopes for riding the SoCal Gravel Trofee#2: LA Roubaix v.1 yesterday. I also had a nice invite to join Dino's crew for an Oceanside-Encinitas-Pizza Port ride. A last-minute lunchtime BBQ & 50th Bday party messed up those plans (until I found out at 7am that the BBQ was moved back to dinner....aarrrggghhh). My revenge was to simply ride and make it up as I pedaled.

Home to Fully Loop, Panorama extra credit, back to Loop, Vincent's Urban Assault extra credit, Water Tank extra credit, back to Panorama but left the park by Summit House and took some quiet streets over to Vesuvius, up the dam into Carbon Canyon & into Chino Hills, up Telegraph to Four Corners & back down, new dirt over to Birch and picked up the undeveloped end of the new Brea Tracks segment, a little walking through the 4" deep pea gravel on the opposite end and finally the slog home. 51 miles & 3080'.

Vincent may not approve, but I skipped the stairs on the CX bike

The newest segment of the Brea Tracks. Nice hardpack DG for the CX to cruise on. Once the landscape goes in it should be really nice

Whiting Luge Whiting with Scott again this morning. Scott was continuing his demo - keeping the hapless Ibis as reported here in the "I Rode Someone Else's Bike Today" thread.

Cool weather - a little humid, but not complaining. Flying on the descents now that my Tracer is dialed in. Scott is already faster than me, even on a bike he dislikes.

Bikes are fun! Dialed bikes are even more fun!!!!!

I was able to sneak in a great ride this morning and got to ride with two guys I haven't ridden with in quite some time. I love how riding creates and maintains bonds. It was like we ride together all the time. Anyhow, I'm still dialing in the new rig, but today reaffirmed how much I am loving the new rig.
