Music... I Listened to Some

What was the name of your coffee bar? I'm a music business refugee, and it all started in a studio around Lankershim and Magnolia in 1998. Wonder if I ever made my way into your spot.
I don't know if 1998 was a typo, and should be 1988? Anyway, my place was Eagles Coffee Pub. On Lankershim, just a bit north of Magnolia, across the alley from the dojo that was filmed as the Cobra Kai dojo in the original Karate Kid movie. Lots of studios around there. The Weir Brothers had a studio a bit south on Lankershim. One on One Recording was a bit north on Lankershim, and has quite the history. Explains why Angelo (from Fishbone) and Steve Perry (from Journey) among many others were also regulars at my place at certain periods of time. Seems likely this is the studio you might've been involved with. It changed ownership over the years, but has remained active to recent times other than an extended closure during the pandemic period. My coffee bar would've been closed by 1998. See link for some history on the recording studio:

Nah, 1998 was correct. I'm definitely familiar with One on One, but the studio I was at was called NRG, on Weddington between Lankershim and Vineland. https://www.nrgrecording.com/ Across the street from what I think was Drum Dr and Mates Rehearsal. I think that street has been largely swallowed up by apartment buildings, but NRG still exists. At the time it didn't have the history of a One on One, but became the go to place for the late nineties early 2000s modern rock bands.

I only saw them live once, somewhere in a decrepit downtown Hollywood building in 1998 or 1999. Great show, underrated band. Goth girls were easy.

The original location for the Smell was on Lankershim. Years later my wife's hair stylist bought the shop and it was used for filming in the American version of Shameless. The Smell was right next to a really busy coffee shop, I wonder if that was you.
They had some pretty good shows before relocating to down town, I want to say, Los Cincos, D+, Murder City Devils, Men's recovery project...

My place would’ve been closed by the time The Smell opened, but it was in the same area of Lankershim and Magnolia.

Another cool place in the neighborhood back during my time was The Iguana Cafe. Sort of a bookstore, coffee bar, and performance space. I knew the owners, and we would try to schedule things so as to not step on each other’s toes. Open mics on different nights. If either of us had a big draw performing, we would check to see that the other establishment didn’t also have something big happening. Tom at the Iguana was good friends with the folks from X and The Blasters, so you would often see Exene and company or Dave and Phil there hanging out there. I saw a really cool sorta experimental show there once with DJ Bonebrake (from X) on marimba and John Densmore (from The Doors) on drums. John Doe, Exene, and Dave Alvin were hanging out that night. Good memories.

My absolute favorite song of all time: Ubi Caritas by John Rutter. Chills every time. Anything by him is amazing in my book. Also love Epica and Kamelot (symphonic metal), Haken (genre defying, but technically progressive metal), anything by Camille Saint Saens (especially Africa, Wedding Cake, and Organ Symphony), any Mozart piano concerto (especially 3rd movement of the 3rd and the whole 22nd), Prokofiev and Lizst piano concertos (all), Rachmaninoff piano concertos (especially the 3rd), The Weepies, Keen, Panic at the Disco, Ateez, BTS, Strat Kids, Mozart and Verdi requiems.

Guilty pleasures: Pentatonix, Voice Play, Owl City.

Maybe: Wage War

Oh yeah, also maybe some stuff by Slipknot
I never made any effort to listen to Slipknot and figure them out. Not sure why. But a weird little story related to a member of the band...

When my wife and I were selling our home in Venice Beach back in 2015, we had some interesting folks come and view it. A couple of note:

Jay Weinberg (drummer for Slipknot and son of Max Weinberg of the E Street Band).

Steven Spielberg and Cate Capshaw (no introduction necessary). They actually viewed the house twice, and wanted to buy it for one of their daughters. The daughter wanted to live in an edgier place in Echo Park.

This is where I should admit that I've been to a grand total of FOUR concerts in my entire life. Garth Brooks; Elton John; Travis Tritt. Rod Stewart at the Hollywood Bowl (a venue I will never visit again). There was another one, but I can't remember who it was. Musta been good. :whistling:

Well, and the Glen Campbell thingy I got taken to when I was a wee lad in the 1960s. Barely remember that one.

Concerts are people-y, so I eschew them.
I think you're pretty safe from the Bowl if you've been to four concerts.
I've been to a decent number more than four, but never the Bowl. Just rode my bike through the parking lot once

Can’t believe I forgot 3 of my top 10: Nickel Creek, Chris Thile/Punch Brothers, System of a Down.

Also, The Magic Flute is incredible…
Never cared for System of a Down at all but, I was at Amoeba with my buddy one time and the singer walked up to him and goes, " Hey, aren't you in that band Miracle Chosuke?"
My buddy goes, "Yeah, I play drums." and the dude says "You guys rip! Just wanted to say hi."

Yeah, weird, but even though I really like them, I simultaneously totally understand why people hate them:stop::thumbsdown:

I almost forgot: Imogen Heap, Andrew Bird, Kave/Gaho, Infected Mushroom, Luca Turilli, Ayreon, Dream Theater (their concept album was incredible), Shinee, Sarah Brightman, Avenged Sevenfold, Coldplay, Muse, some stuff by Native Consruct and Opeth, The Rose, some stuff by Three Days Grace, some stuff by Within Temptation, Xdinary Heroes, some by Between the Buried and Me, Tomorrow X Together…

Busy week for me show wise. I generally prefer to not do anything after work or, on the weekend. But, I went to see LCD Sound system on Saturday with an good friend ( Not my thing, but, will say, the opener Mermaid Chunky was pretty good.) . Went to see the Briefs last night ( always a good live show, a bit cheese ball.) I've got my buddy's show down in Fullerton at Programme Skate/sound tomorrow and going to my wife's client's play on Sunday.
This is all already exhausting.

I saw LCD on Sunday closing night, and was blown away! Definitely my thing, but we felt like chaperones to all the kids there! Not as bad as a Current Joys show we went to last month, but still, definitely emeritus status!
Knew nothing about Mermaid Chunky, and were very happy with the experience. Songs took a smidge too long to kick in, but when they got there, were great!

Also saw Los Lobos at Pappy's Saturday night, and wow, 50 years of making fantastic music! What a great band!

Dude!!! Rad! Yes, the crowd was weird. We figured out it was a Coachella kids. Went to the back of the room about 1/2 way through the show and it was like 40+ people acting like dip shits. I looked over and this lady was like, smelling me(!?!) I asked her " What's up?" and she just said "Sorry." and walked away.

Heh, nobody smelled me, but the dude next to us was doing coke bumps!
And I unfortunately could smell several people that didn't believe in the power of deodorant!
So we had a really good experience, sorry you didn't have the same :(

I went to a small club in Mesa last Saturday for Against All Authority and the Suicide Machines. Great show and awesome little venue. Had my cousin come with and his two college age girls. Haven’t been to a show with him since Assorted Jelly Beans, Longfellow and the Vandals at the showcase in the 90’s. His girls loved the little club experience.

I finally went to a show a Programme in Fullerton. My buddy’s band played but we showed up after their set.
Cool little skate/record store. They’ve been having shows there for years, it’s just a long drive from my place.
All the bands were pop punk so we just sat in the parking lot bs-ing with my buddies and some other people.
I’m surprised they can have shows there as often as they do because people just kinda milled around the parking lot drinking. But, no one got too wild.
Well, my friend and his gf did, but I was the DD, so, they just annoyed the Sh!t out of me on the drive home.
