Hurkey Creek ride

Met up with Bill @Walleye near Hurkey Creek campground Saturday. It was a beautiful cool morning, a little cooler than I was expecting however quickly warmed up on the keen camp climb. The trail was in really good shape. Apparently people have been working on these trails since the last fire several years ago. @evdog has some reports not long ago regarding this. Bill and I had intentions of downloading course maps but that didn't happen. I was trusting Bill with his Spidey senses to navigate.
We rode up and around through Johnson's meadow then back on to Bonita Vista fire road. The meadow was mostly flat, then we continued climbing.
Made our way to snakeskin, cahuila cutoff, then tres hombres. This is such a great area , all single track with lots of twists and turns. Large beautiful rock features mixed in, sometimes tight spaces. Beautiful vistas! There is some climbing mixed in also. Really love this area. After this we are back on Bonita vista fire road and made our way to missing link.
On the way to missing link I heard this terrible sound coming from my rear brake, noticeable rubbing and sometimes harsh sounding. Pulled over and saw a small twig , what appear to be on top of the brake pads. I pulled it out and sounded okay temporarily and then the sound returned. This time at times very harsh almost metal on metal sound. I really had to back off on breaking very hard. The sad thing was we were just getting to the fun downhill part.
Next on the menu. Missing link, rage through the sage, then tunnel of love , link together for flowy, fast series ........ However with my brake issue it wasn't as fast as it could have been. We still had a great time.
Bill usually lead on the climbs and I would take the lead on the downs.
As others have said it seems like Idlywild miles are harder and today was no exception.
If you're keeping score, 18mi, 2200elev.

Sounds like he twig may have pushed the spreader spring in-between the pads or maybe you lost the braking surface of a pad. Or a pebble is stuck in the pad. Just a thought. Looking forward to riding up there in a couple weeks if its not freeeeeeezing!

1/2 of one side of a spreader spring was bent.. and the pad on that side was super worn down with a little bit of metal showing. The other pad was fine. I replaced the pads yesterday and everything seems fine.

Very cool to see you bag this ride @scan! I plan on doing this on my BDay ride on 11/22. There are a couple more trails that I am hoping to add to the ride you did, namely Middle Southridge, Logpile and maybe Suttons Run? Looking at Trailforks reports to see what is still ridable. If they are, it would make my ride closer to a 22-25 miler w/ approx. 2,800' of climbing

Damn, this those trail names bring back memories of riding and camping up there back in the STR days. Last time I rode up there was my backelor party weekend back in 2016. These trails were still closed and the Hub shop was still open in town. I ended up riding with their group because all my buddies were sleeping-off the previous night.
Last time I got to ride from the campground must've been 2008-ish. Good intel here, thanks @scan & @Walleye
